Forums - Sales Discussion - Look at those Legs Game of the Day (9/14) - Resistance: Fall of Man

This is the last new type of thread I'm going to do in my "Game of the Day" series, and I will now rotate through them 1-2 a day.

Thread Description: In this thread I will be looking at games that have been released for at least 18 months, and then comparing how much first week, and first month sales make up of the total. In the original post there will be one of two polls, one for a game with strong legs (1st month sales make up less than 30% of total sales) and one for why a game was more frontloaded (1st month sales make up more than 35% of total sales) and then  also request people leave a comment with what game they voted for and why.   I'm calling these "…of the Day" threads, but even if it is not the same day feel free to continue to comment in the thread. With the thread description out the way here is today's  Look at those Legs Game of the Day…

Game of the Day

9/14

Resistance: Fall of Man

Column1 # of copies sold % of Total Sales
First Week Sales 0.24 6.71
First Month Sales 0.54 14.86

Description: As you can see on it's way to 3.61 million copies sold, only ~7% of those were sold in its first week, and only ~15% in its first month. Which means Resistance is not at all frontloaded. So why was the title able to sustain strong sales for such a long period of time? Bundles, lack of competition, strong word of mouth? Something else? Vote in the poll and then let us know what you think.

If you liked this post check out the most recent threads in my other "...of the Day" sales threads.Retro Sales Game of the Day , Change in Sales Game of the Day , and Sales Battle of the Day. I will be posting 1-2 new "...of the Day" sales threads every day, so look out for new ones.

I'd say lack of competition on the console. If that wasn't it, I think sales for Resistance 2 would be closer to the first one.

Resistance was heavily bundled, which is why R2 failed to come close in sales while supposedly being better and including co-op.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

R:FoM only sold initially because there really wasn't much else, sold midway through its life because it was bundled like crazy, and finally went to $30. If R:FoM had released today it would barely sell anything.

As far as I know R2 hasn't had any bundles or major price drops so that's why it's so far behind.

i preferred R:FOM to R2 the changed to much, the co-op was good but you need like 5 people to finish a level i prefer campaign co-op

twestern is correct, besides for his statement of it would barely sell anything, cause it still would've done good, just not 3mil+ good.

Sorry, by barely I meant struggling to break a million (which is still respectable for a new IP).

Ah Resistance, what a wonderful game. I'd say it's the best FPS I've played this gen, quite easily.

KZ2 may have the graphics but for pure fun factor, nothing beats R:FoM.

Let me show you why they call me the velour fog. Hit it.

I met her in a club down in old Soho,

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola,

C-o-l-a, cola.

She, walked up to me and she asked me to dance,

I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said;

Leela, L-e-e-l-a, Leela, Lee, Lee, Lee, Leela

Leeeeeeeelaaaaaaaa

Agreed, I don't understand the R:FoM hate.

I don't hate it, I just don't think it's anything special.

The only things that made it stand out initially were:

  1. It was a hyped exclusive
  2. There wasn't much else on the system at the time

Beyond that it was an incredibly generic game.  Don't get me wrong, it was a nice throwback to classic shooters, but had it been released today it would have been lost amongst the much better games.
