There have been a fair amount of stories written regarding a UMD transfer program, but as of right now, there has been absolutely no concrete plan released by SCE as to what the actual trade in/trade up plan is much less how they plan to implement.
The PSP Go is coming out next month. So the only reason for the silence would be if it's not a priority, or there simply isn't a plan in place upon debut.
Turning in slip case inserts or UMDs would be the most logical, but that leaves SCE with the task of disposing of potentially millions or even tens of millions of UMDs. Slip case insert turn ins would be much simpler for them (Warner does a HD-DVD trade up plan for BD "Red to Blue" which is well implemented), but seeing as how it's the UMDs that have value on the used market, plenty of people would likely sell their used UMDs after trading in their slip covers for DL codes, or even worse for SCE, simply sell the DL codes if they never actually bought or planned to buy a DL only Go.
These are things SCE is closely considering I guarantee.
And what they don't want to do is create an instant glut of millions used UMD games overnight which brings us back to turning in millions of UMDs for DL codes. DL codes for PSP games that aren't currently even available on the PSN Store I might add.
Personally, I'm very curious as to what solution SCE comes up with as a simple "turn in your old UMDs for DL codes" would be the best solution for me, but until I see the official plan, it's not something I can use in reality.
