Forums - Sony - 100gb Blu-ray already ready for production

Well, now developers have twice the space for duplicate data!!

I like uncompressed PCM as much as the next guy, but I feel that many developers haven't shown any real advantage of BD yet. MGS4 supposedly filled a BD, but honestly it didn't look like anything that couldn't be fit on a DVD.

Yeah like devs need all that space. Seems way too much.

Yeah like Blu Ray was made for gaming. Seems way wrong.

Can the PS3 read these discs? If yes, can it read them at the same speeds as it reads 25-50 GB discs?

Uncharted 3 maxing out 100 GB Blu-ray confirmed!!

25GB to be exact

OT: I think games like Final Fantasy XIII should take advantage of this kind of space. Good news indeed though...

No i think you missed my point. I know UC2 maxed the 25gb blu-ray, but what i meant was a joke at a 3rd part maxing out the 100gb years down the line...

I thought PS3 games at least were limited to dual layer, 50gb discs.  And I thought that was a function of the optical drive not being able to read additional layers.

Which also makes me question the claim that all Blu-Ray players will be able to read 8 layer discs and whatever.   Perhaps that's correct for movies and the PS3 just has the 2-layer limit on video games?  Maybe firmware can change this limit in the future?

Really don't see this being needed unless we're talking a long RPG in fully 7.1 audio.

@Lightning_24: As far as I know, the only game that was huge was LBP. That's because of all the toturial video's.

@NJ5: I believe it was confirmed that these would work on current standard BD Players... but I would assume it's at a slower speed... which is bad...

4 ≈ One

This is awesome, I really want to see MS release a Xbox540(?) with a Blu-Ray drive in it. Mass Effect 3 being 100gb would blow my mind, and Lost Odyssey 2 with only one disk would be amazing too. I would buy it.

Is there any released game that use 50gb other than MGS4 ? I think FFXIII will use that too. Agent, next GTA, FF Versus XIII, Resonance of Fate might use that too.

100GB might not useful right now but what about year 2012 or further. I dont think Sony will release another console that time. This gen almost reach its limit for graphic. You know the better graphic means more expensive to develop. I dont see any company other than large one like SE, Activision, EA, and ubisoft can afford that. Only things we need is longer games. So, X360 which only use DVD might left behind for having low disc space. Yes, it can use multiple disc but not suitablr for all games. Sandbox games like GTA might has problem (GTAIV use full capacity of DVD). I can see Microsoft released new console which use Blu Ray or other new disc. Sony might not has any problem as they already use the technology. I can see why Sony called PS3 is 10 year console. Even they need to make new console it could be just PS3.5. Sony might loss lot of money in beginning but end up getting lot of money.
