I have both the phat and slim and I'll tell you that the slim is not that much smaller at least not when comparing to ps2 phat vs ps2 slim.
As for the symbolism, some people (myself included) still view the launch ps3 as the real ps3. That was the console the Father of Playstation dreamed up and what we are left with now is a result of his "firing". So my point is the original phat simply can't be viewed as a joke when it is waay more feature rich than the slim and represents the last console of the Playstation founder.
