I, too, think Sony is just shoveling BD into their loyal customers' throats.
True, in the future, you will/may use it, but that's that, FUTURE. You're basically paying for a technology that you're not using now with an inflated price because it's still new.
By the time you actually use this "future proof" technology, the price will have already dropped to affordable level.

Its importance is also based on the customer's income. Those that are using it will gladly welcome it. Those that are not using it are forced into paying for something they never use. PS3 could have been released with DVD drive and then release BD drive as external add-on. Hell, even a different SKU with BD will be better.

I guess, you can look at it this way.
Will you pay for a product that you will use twice it's price?
Or will you pay for a product that you will never use for half the price?
I am sticking with prior.

"I am sticking with prior."  So you choose "pay 2x for something you'll use".  Isn't that what Sony gave you?

THE WHOLE POINT of PS3 having Blu-ray is for the PS3 to have it STANDARD.  Add-ons never enjoy great success compared to the main system.  It would defeat the whole point if it was an add-on.  Same goes for a different SKU, no one's going to make a game only some people's systems can play -- aside from the lower customer base, they'd get crucified.

This is very true, the last thing Sony wants with the PS3 is to release a Sega-CD-like add-on.  Microsoft knows that their HD DVD add-on is never going to be used for games.  I would be overwhelmingly surprised if any developer produced an HD DVD game for the 360.  The question is whether customers feel that the additional space offered by Blu-ray over DVD9 is worth the additional cost of including it as standard.  It's clear that price is a primary concern for the PS3, with Sony doing everything they can to reduce the cost of the unit including the removal of backwards compatibility (which I think was a smart move, btw).

They have all done about the same amount of lying...

Nintendo - Final Fantasy IV = Final Fantasy II, Final Fantasy VI = Final Fantasy III (back in the day), Region Free. I feel like I'm really paying $250 for another Gamecube, with waggle.

Microsoft - 3-5% failure rate, Wii60 concept - I'm probably the only one that sees this as a big long term lie. They just want to convince people to buy non-Sony this generation while they take care of the Sony problem. After they defeat Sony (in their plan), they will wage war against Nintendo. Everyone is falling for Wii60, so everything is going according to plan for M$ total domination (a day when we see $100 games and Consoles that act like Vista). Also, we don't need HDMI, we don't need Hard Drive, We don't need a service like Home, etc.

Sony - Most have covered it here in this thread. Their lies definitely make it to the top of the press this generation, when Nintendo's and Microsoft's tend to get buried.

Maybe I have more of a distaste for M$ than the other companies.

Your examples discredit your assertion.  "FFVI=FF3" was not meant as deception and isn't even Nintendo's doing.  And overcharging is not a lie -- even if $250 is overcharging (which I do not grant).

I was always under the impression that the FF numbering change was Nintendo's doing, to either avoid confusion.  When the series defected to Sony, the numbering suddenly changed.

I probably should have clarified the $250 not as a lie, but more of what I'm really paying for.  I'll fork over $250 probably this Christmas when more of the titles I like arrive (SMG, SSB, and MK).
