I, too, think Sony is just shoveling BD into their loyal customers' throats.
True, in the future, you will/may use it, but that's that, FUTURE. You're basically paying for a technology that you're not using now with an inflated price because it's still new.
By the time you actually use this "future proof" technology, the price will have already dropped to affordable level.
Its importance is also based on the customer's income. Those that are using it will gladly welcome it. Those that are not using it are forced into paying for something they never use. PS3 could have been released with DVD drive and then release BD drive as external add-on. Hell, even a different SKU with BD will be better.
I guess, you can look at it this way.
Will you pay for a product that you will use twice it's price?
Or will you pay for a product that you will never use for half the price?
I am sticking with prior.
