I guess you can say it sold faster than PS1 in it's first 3 years since the Ps1 wasn't available outside of Japan for the first year, but it is clearly behind pace even if sony exceeds their shipment forecast by millions and millions of units.
PS3 is still trailing behind DS, Wii, PS2, PS1, GB, GBA. so...7th place.

I'd say PS3 / 360 are still the gamecube / xbox of this generation.
Wii is going to be miles out in front (probably never as far as PS2 since the market is a lot bigger now and 2nd and 3rd are able to pick up a lot more sales). and 360 / Ps3 are going to be pretty much tied.
it'll reach 24 million, and by christmas the gap between the ps3 and 360 will be 4-5 million
