Forums - Sony - 3D PS3 gaming arrving in 2010?

CNET reports Sony is aiming to ship HDTVs that support three-dimensional gaming next year, with plans for the 3D technology to be built into the console starting in 2011 and 2012.

At the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, Sony showed off PlayStation 3 games running in 3D (See below) at its booth on the expo floor. Though attendants stressed the footage was for demonstration purposes only, it did show Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and MotorStorm running in three full dimensions on a large HDTV. (Like the 3D movies currently being screened in theaters, it required special glasses to view.)

Now, Sony has confirmed that the first HDTVs to support PS3 3D gaming will likely hit the market next year. Last week at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung, or International Radio Exhibition) in Berlin, Sony reps told GameSpot sibling site CNET that the company is aiming to bring a PS3-compatible 3D Bravia HDTV into full production by the end of 2010.

To further tease the possibilities of the technology, Sony set up the prototype unit with a PS3 on the IFA show, showing off existing games like WipeOut HD being played in 3D. Company reps said the technology on display was built into the HDTV itself, meaning it would work with pre-existing PS3 games and consoles.

However, more importantly for gamers, Sony reps said the company is aiming to integrate the 3D technology into the PS3 hardware itself starting in 2011 and 2012. If that plan comes to fruition, those PS3 could turn any HDTV into a 3D display without any modification. The company said similar plans are underway for Blu-ray players and VAIO laptops.

Nice but how much will the 3D HDTV's cost?

Would i have to wear those blue and red tinted plastic glasses?

I cant imagine how games not designed for 3D would work with this, how would it decipher the depth of certain objects over others. The idea of 3D gaming sounds like a fun feature that could work with certain games, so I hope it works well. That pic of Wipeout looks like a blurry shitstorm.

I dont like the idea of having to buy another TV.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

I hope not.  I just bought an LED TV.

the next generation of gaming will not be a hard launch. I think Microsoft and Sony will both hold off for a longer time and introduce natal and the ps3motion BUT..

it would be great if Sony introduced the "PS3-D" alongside with the PS3 motion tech. the motion would work with all existing PS3's but to game in 3-D, the new system would need to be bought.

If Sony hasn't already considered something the name and idea of PS3-D, then I am a genius!

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

Surely Sony are aware that many people are already playing 3d gaming with their 360 and this week with PS3 via the downloadable game. Ibelieve it arrives on PSN this week. And Live Arcade has had it since 26 August.

Also there is no need for a new TV at all.

Many games for PS3 and 360 this year will be fully in 3d at retail level to.

G Force game based on the 3d film is in 3d. As is the game of Avatar this year. This is not new for next year. And I'm a bit flabbergasted that noone on this site knows there is likely 6 games by the end of the year in 3d with glasses. Again no need for a new TV.

I think this is the same technology as NVIDIA has for the PC, so no you don't have to wear those glasses.

Instead you have to wear different glasses which block the right and left eye on each alternate frame. Basically the PS3 alternately renders two different points of view (one per eye), and the glasses make sure each eye only sees the frames which correspond to its point of view.

This of course requires the PS3 to render at 120 fps, and the TV to be able to display 120 fps (so that each eye sees 60 frames per second, less than that would make it too flickery).

I hope the above wasn't too confusing...

Does this mean I have to buy another HDTV? If so, screw that!
