Forums - Sony - PS3 accounts for 10% of iPlayer viewing

PS3 accounts for 10% of iPlayer viewing

Since Sony integrated full BBC iPlayer support into the PlayStation 3 as part of its v3.00 firmware update, the console has become the second most popular platform for iPlayer viewing.

The BBC has confirmed the PlayStation 3 is accounting for 10 per cent of viewing, overtaking Mac (with 8.5 per cent) to become the second most used platform after PC.

"User response to our new iPlayer for PS3 has been amazing," commented Anthony Rose, controller of the BBC's online media group and vision in a statement posted to the BBC blog.

"Although it's less than a week since we launched, iPlayer on PS3 now accounts for a massive 10 per cent of all iPlayer viewing, overtaking Mac to be our second most popular platform for IP-delivered content.

"We'll have to wait and see whether this holds up in the coming weeks, but this enthusiastic reception makes it clear that users do want iPlayer on their TV - something that bodes well for Canvas and other IPTV propositions."

Sony has done a "great job", added Rose, of enhancing the PlayStation 3's Flash playback experience to allow full screen viewing at a frame rate of 25fps. The firmware update also added the iPlayer icon to the console's XMB, allowing one-click access to the service.

I found this article verying interesting and I think highlights the benefits of Integration. The iPlayer has always been available but not necessarily this accessable.

Yup. I use the PS3 exclusively for iPlayer now it's easier to access from the main menu.

I watched iPlayer before with frmw 2.x but it took valuable minutes/seconds from my life simply navigating to the site.

Same here, never used iPlayer on my Ps3 even though I could, now I use it exclusively ;).

I have loved iPlayer for a while now and usually watch it on my laptop, but since Sony integrated it into the PS3 properly, it's great.

I was watching some Cbeebies stuff with the wee man last night and it's great for stuff like that.  Just hope they speed up the actual interface a little though, but the streaming is brill.

I really hope they push for some more channels viewers.  It would be nice to get Channel4 on side and get some of the great archives they have with 4OD and it would be even better if Film4 came on board as well.

iPlayer is only available to UK residents. I think it works by IP blocks as I have been refused in the past when the IP was using was registered in France.

I have a BT Vision box (IPTV box) at home which has the replay function for all Terestial players, that is iPlayer, 4OD, 5OD, ITV player (Currently the only one to have them all) and Film 4. It is a fantastic feature and really no reason why this should not find its way fully integrated into at least the 360 and PS3 consoles.
