Forums - Gaming - The Big Problem with Sony and Microsoft's Motion controls?

Fitness is a fad? Gyms and personal trainers have been around a bit long to be considered a fad, don't you think...?

It's most definitely a fad. and a rather stupid one at that. Most men are getting way too big and killing their bodies in the process with protein and shit.

I agree with a couple things here. There's no way these new motion technologies would succeed if the motion controls are an *option* ie: Halo 4 with an option to flail your arms around randomly to change weapons and grenades etc.

It would obviously be easy for companies to port their Wii titles to PS3...probably not so much 360. Since the Wii is known of shovelware and crappy ports, I can't wait till the others are defined by crappy ports OF the Wii shovelware :D :D.

Also I don't see titles like Madworld, The Conduit etc being PORTED to either of the HD console for the mere fact that...they are HD and have better graphics. Would defeat the whole point. Perhaps an original project, sequel, or a ground up remake.

Software and marketing sell everything. I wo

You won?

But yes, that about sums it up.

Problem is, you need software and marketing to battle Wii Fit and Wii Sports. Two of the most successful games of all time. You also need to go back on everything that your console is. It's not impossible, but it sure isn't easy.

It would have been "i wonder". Got left in the editing process.  Useless tangent.  The gaming industry has never been easy for anyone.  Nintendo isn't the only company capable of creating great products and software.  They have about the only one been advertising it though(exceptions Halo and GeoW).  What Playstation game have we seen on Oprah?   Marketing. Singstar and Buzz among others could be far more successful if only slighly streamlined but far better advertising.  Natal already has great advertising and it's not even out yet.  Sometimes i am frustrated with Sony's slowness to get in the game butI think we are seeing the beginings.

Titles like Trauma Center wouldn't really need and HD upgrade as they are about interface and fun.  Not that someone isn't going to come along and create something more uber realistic with the processing power later but there are also examples of titles that could easily be ported.

What they need to do is pay others companies to port some of their wii games over (like Madworld).

Yup.

Edit: So would that work in Sony's favor? Due to the extreme similarity between their motion "mote"?

I'm not sure. Sony's motion controller is not designed to play games like wii games. Sony's motion controller is designed to actually move an item in 1:1 real space, no waggling. so when you swing your sword, you hit where you swing, etc. Sony's motion controller is what the wii mote should of been at launch. It's far more accurate than any other of the motion controllers and i dare say it could end up being the best. If sony can get some developers to make some killer apps for it, you'll see a pretty big launch. As of right now it is far better than Natal/wii mote for gaming though, we'll just have to wait and see what the execution is like.

Have you heard of Wii Motion Plus?

Singstar and Buzz are over marketed, they regularly appear in the ads for the system. The market has simply decided that they don't want those games (though they have accepted the initially less heavily marketed Guitar Hero). The best they ever sell is a couple of million, hardly the breakout success needed to push hardware.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

This is why is say with some steamlining. For one the music is very marketed at European taste.  If they had something with more Americanized and current songs lists they would find mass success.  The commercials could be like something akin to th latest Cricket commercials. They also only have a tiny of African American and Latino artists as well. streamline to better interest larger demographics.  Some hip hop wouldn't hurt either.

Why do people think porting Wii games over to 'Wand' or Natal will be so easy? Its completely different technology!! By that logic, PS3 ports of 360 games should be the same, but their not.

Both 'Wand' and Natal are completely based on the camera. And each camera is different itself. Any code thats in a Wii game will have to be redone to fit the tech in the corresponding camera.

O.o it's really disgusting to see not only middle aged people do that (all red and veiny) but high school kids as well >.<

They don't look strong, they just look like monsters O.o

Because Sony has said that the libraries used for the wand are very similar to that of the Wii.  Thats Why.

That wouldn't be the best choice of game to port, of course. It's got a limted market.i
