Forums - Microsoft - Why doesn't Microsoft ever redesign it's consoles?

I'm sure that if they wanted to, they could make the 360 smaller and they definitely could've made the original Xbox smaller.

Redesigning isn't only for the purposes of increasing sales. Making things smaller also makes the cost of making the console less, and so they could afford to make more price cuts.

So why do you guys think Microsoft never bothers to make things smaller? Is it that the 360's components just can't be reduced in size anymore?

Maybe because they had enough overheating issues, and can't risk to bring them back?

Probably a waste of money.

This.

360 is fine. Ok-sales, ok-cost of production.

They are spending the money on new projects like Natal... why would they need to re-design it ?

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

wrong, redesigning it means they can shrink down the over size and weight of the unit, they'll save money on materials, they'll save money on storage, and they'll be able to ship more at a time which again saves money and this equates to more profits, this is the whole point.

Have you seen how hollow the 360 is?

They would do well reduce that waisted space, and to boot they'll refresh the 360 look, and this along with a good price equals more machines sold.

The only reason they wouldn't release a slim is if there ready to release the next xbox, it's that or the fact that the hadn't initially planned to redesign the 360, but are doing so know, and this of course takes time as they need to redesign the layout of the machine as well as the looks of it as well as retool their factories, all this taken into account could mean that they could technically be ready for a slim to be launched along with NATAL, a relaunch if you will, and one targeted towards the casuals, this would be the most obvious direction Microsoft should go.

Like I said though, the whole point of a redesign is saving money and increasing profits, and at the end of the day this is just smart business.

this is what i mean. if you make it smaller, of course the materials will cost less, and more boxes can fit in the airplane, truck, ship, warehouse or whatever, and therefore less cost on such things.

Hey, Microsoft is no engineering company like Sony.

They strengh is on Software and services. I could hardly believe that it would be part of their strategy.

Sony does hardware.

Microsoft does software.

Well, they couldn't with either for obvious reasons: overheating.

(Yes, the original Xbox overheated. Look up "Xbox melted power cable" if you don't believe me).

Um... I don't know what you're talking about, especially as I was shocked in 2004 when my friend brought over his Xbox and it was about 40% smaller than mine...

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Because size matters.
