Very good launch for the Slim... but as always, what really matters is the sustained demand, not the peak. Let's see how it goes until the end of the year and early next year.

Sustained sales will tell the full story as usual.

The debut was certainly beyond anyone's expectations enough to silence all critics though. We'll see how the drop off is over the next 2-3 weeks as sales normalize leading up to the holiday season.

From there, Black Friday will be the big tell as to how well the PS3 should sell through 2009.

Right now, software sales will probably provide a more accurate view of just who's buying the revised consoles. The overall increase would seem to indicate these are new buyers who have been waiting for a $299 PS3, but the specific breakdowns on PS3 exclusives should confirm or dispel this.

Sales of peripherals like extra controllers and media remotes would be another key indicator.

As was mentioned somewhere earlier, need to remember how predicted this price cut and redesign was.

The massiveness of this peak is due atleast somewhat to people holding out for a slim, and hence coming from previous weeks missed sales.

360 sold 6.5 million in the last 4 months of 2008 after the 360s price cuts.PS3 has a good chance of selling between 6 to 8 million in last four months of 2009. PS3 only sold 4 million consoles in the last 4 months of last year so it would be a 50% to 100% increase in sales for 2009 in comparison to last 4 months of 2008.
Most sales of the year come in the last four months of the year.

If 8M by december is possible, then the PS3 should overtake the 360 by the end of next year

U speak sense. It should do between 6.5 & 8 million over the next 4 months, as the PS3's 1st week of price cut seems to be a lot bigger than the 360's was last year. Maybe 20% or so more than the 360's. Time will tell. Some really big games comming, too, right through all of next year.
