Forums - Sony - Why Were Initial Hardware Projections So Far Off?

I want to know why initial hardware predictions were so far off?! When I mean far off, I dont mean by a few %, I mean:

http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4917

“We project that September sales worldwide will be around double that of August - around 600,000 units.”

- Week 1 will nearly outdo the ENTIRE PROJECTED MONTH

"PS3 is up about 85% this week (~70k) - slims available but limited to only some retailers and in limited quantities - next week should be 90-100k in the Americas with the slim being fully available everywhere"

- Taking the high end of this estimate, still 25% off!

“I'd say 50k [week 1 in Japan] is a reasonable estimate, 100k seems a little high to me but who knows?”

-50k week 1 in Japan is INCREDIBLY far off from 150k. Hell, even 100k is!

Actual Week 1 Sales (Still an estimate, but now with evidence to back it up):

Others: +200k
Americas: +125k
Japan: +150k

Total: +500k

So what gives? Why were all of these predictions so bad?

edit...

No one actually B_E_L_I_E_V_E_D.
Even hardcore Sony fans were afraid of making big predictions, afraid to sound like hardcore Sony fans.

Edit - do not start a new thread, ask a mod to move it =/

Who knows. But given that this was so unexpected I wouldn't be surprised if that 500k turns out to be more than 600k as more data comes in.

The official Vita thread http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=130023&page=1

Hardware predictions were off because everyone assumed that sales would be mostly price drop driven.

Selling 500k units in one week crazy, i just wonder what the next few weeks will be like, I mean if the PS3 sell another 500k to hit 1 million for the month of September, and stays flat (maybe a little down) for October, then it will have a crazy Christmas (hell it might even allow SONY to reach its 13 million PS3's shipped/sold this fiscal year)
