Forums - Sales - PS3 Slim 500k first week - let's consider the software too!

Very impressive opening week, higher than what I was expecting.

Well, the real test now is how PS3 sales hold up over the next few months-and how they hold up against any response from Nintendo or Microsoft.

This should make Q4 2009 much more competitive. Hopefully it'll make 2010 more competitive as well.

What could MS possibly respond with? ANOTHER price drop?

Killzone 2 is back in the UK top 40.

So what gives? Why were all of these predictions so bad?

The general appeal of the PS3 was concluded (estimated) to be lower than it actually appeares to be.

Well, I expect they'll increase their advertising at the very least. It's doubtful they can afford another price cut or justify it to their shareholders. They could try Halo bundles to retain their big advantage in North America, and bundles in Europe/Others to remain (overall) even with PS3. That's only short term response though. I don't expect MS or Nintendo to hit the panic buttons yet-we may not see a response to Slim from either company until next year.

As for Nintendo, the question isn't what they'll do to respond, but whether they'll even bother to respond.

Good spot. That's excellent!

Nintendo will respond if it keeps on going like this, you only have to look at the history of psp vs ds lite to know that, evertytime sony released a good psp scu and it sold more than the ds, they have responded to make a newer version of the ds just to swing things back in their favour.
Don't get me wrong i am a sony loyalist I just know you can't understimate nintendo, they will fight back, but for sony and the ps3 i really hope it overtakes the xbox.

it's the future of handheld

I think InFamous will pick up for the next few weeks, and then have a decent Christmas. Sony are still giving that game alot of promotion here in the UK anyway, and it's included in alot of PS3 Slim bundles.

Well, you may be right there. It's far too soon to tell if this can push Sony into second place, but it is in many ways too soon to tell if Nintendo will do anything. I still think they'll retain the Wii's price-but I think they'll bundle in New Super Mario Bros Wii in November.

Even though I didn't expect that big sales, I didn't ever try to deny that the first week sales will be big.
People withheld their PS3 purchase for MONTHS waiting for this week, of course sales are high.

On the other hand, I still believe that 1-2 months from now, it will sell slightly better than the 360, and totally not effect the Wii.
