Forums - Gaming - Fallout 3 Is Doing My Head In.(No Spoilers involved).

Keep at it, you'll find yourself making progress slowly but steadily.

There's just something about the setting, and the ability to just head for the horizon, that is terribly appealing about Fallout 3.

I spent ages wandering around before finally actually trying to get anywhere with quests, etc.

Thats exactly what I am finding.

Thanks for that I mean you just get into something you never intended to get into I am finding. Fascinating stuff.

its a WRPG. WRPGs are all about exploration and discovery.
you probably first played JRPGs right? those are limited to the exploration part but are more character based. (im not going to say story driven cause both got good stories, it just a matter of taste.)

What is a jrpg?

What is a wrpg?

I am not been smart btw.

Jrpg= Japanese role playing game

Wrpg=Western role playing game

The main difference is that Jrpgs didn't change as much as Wrpgs from their ancestor(Console Rpg.) In the  80s the two genres were pretty much the same. What happened though, was that Jrpgs headed toward a strategy route while Wrpgs headed toward Action-Adventure. Lately though Jrpgs have been getting into the Action genre.  So basically WRPGs=Action Adventure, Jrpgs= Turn Based Strategy or Action game. This is only gameplay we are talking about though. We can get into other areas such as story, but that doesn't matter when distinguishing genres.

It goes deeper, imho.  There is far more flexibility in WRPG than the few JRPGs I've tried to play.  It's strictly a playig style thing, but I jsut can't get into it for JRPGs.

I friggin love the game.
BUT I've got the PS3 version so no DLC yet

BTW, how large are the dlc packs (GB wise) on the 360?

I couldn't even finish the game with the giant bugs running around. It was a decent game from what I've played though.

I mean I have it a week now and just seem to be getting nowhere.

Yet I just cant put it down.

I keep heading off somwhere unknowen to myself.

Spend hours there and then I eventually go back to where I should be.

I have to admit RPG games are not my thing usually.

tried a few but just could not get into them.

Yet something about this game keeps me wanting to play it.

It is hard and frustrating but quite addictive.

So I was wondering has anyone felt the same about it.

Also if I were to get into it (which I am) would other RPG games open up to me.

I am a shooter man myself so this is new to me.

I would be interested to hear views from more experienced RPG fans.

Either way this is a special game IMHO.

These are EXACTLY the things you should feel.

The frustration and disorientation I felt were without a competitor!

And yet I got into the game slowly ... and it sucked me right through his dark cave-mouth with jaws of rock and rusty iron...

130 hours in and haven't played the  3 last DLCs yet...

But it is not like other action RPG's. Mass Effect is DEFINITELY NOT in the same category.

Very glad you've enjoyed FO3. It's a fantastic game.

If your a fan of RPGs with some active elements in 'em, may I suggest:

  • Oblivion (kind of the predicessor of Fallout 3. Same company made it, and Fallout 3 uses Oblivion's engine)
  • Mass Effect (Rather open, but the story is better, and graphics are jaw-dropping)
  • Fable 2 (to me, it's a mature-rated Zelda game with more free elements to it)

If your new to RPGs, it really comes down to how you want your RPG to progress. If you want something linear, by-the-book, with a good storyline, Japanese-developed RPGs are great (Tales of, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Star Ocean are examples). If you want RPGs that are more open-ended, and active, you definately want to stay with Western-developed RPGs. Both feature usually distinct sets of gameplay traditions.

There are many, MANY RPGs coming up soon for the 360 that will satisfy your craving for these style of RPGs. I suggest you check recent threads concerning upcoming RPGs, as there are many, and they look fantastic.

I would also reccomend Sacred 2 if you can stand a non-shooter RPG. It puts Fallout 3 to shame in terms of size, and rogue elements.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Operation: Anchorage: 369 MB

The Pitt: 492 MB

Broken Steel: 620 MB

Point Lookout: 450 MB

Mothership Zeta: 324 MB

@ OP: I enjoyed it, it's got enough differences from Oblivion that it doesn't feel like the same game. Definitely a lot of places to explore and people to see. Keep in mind if you play through the main quest, if you don't have Broken Steel, the game ends. So either get Broken Steel or put off the main quest for awhile. I've put about 40 hours in and haven't seen probably have of what this game has to offer.

awesome!

thanks for that.

methinks I'll just wait for the goty edition....

I still got the GOTY edition of Oblivion sealed, I HAD to buy it for 12 euro's..... I liked it at the PC, but Fallout 3 got my RPG needs covered. I really thought I didn't like it, I'm more of a shooter fan. But after trading it for the dissapointing Far Cry 2, I can say to everyone that didn't play it, that you're missing out on something.
