Jrpg= Japanese role playing game Wrpg=Western role playing game The main difference is that Jrpgs didn't change as much as Wrpgs from their ancestor(Console Rpg.) In the 80s the two genres were pretty much the same. What happened though, was that Jrpgs headed toward a strategy route while Wrpgs headed toward Action-Adventure. Lately though Jrpgs have been getting into the Action genre. So basically WRPGs=Action Adventure, Jrpgs= Turn Based Strategy or Action game. This is only gameplay we are talking about though. We can get into other areas such as story, but that doesn't matter when distinguishing genres. |
It goes deeper, imho. There is far more flexibility in WRPG than the few JRPGs I've tried to play. It's strictly a playig style thing, but I jsut can't get into it for JRPGs.
