^ be a nice guy now darth.

Respect the elderly.

lol  check ur wall

@stika

Yes but a HUGe part of being influencial to an industry IS gaining popularity

Depends on which part we're talking about really

For the sake of argument let's say that sony's wand and 360's natal flop

and that nintendo's next gen console also flops

where is the influence of the wii? It was pretty much a flicker

motion sensing isn't as mass produced as all that, and most of the wii's library consists of sub-par games because of motion sensing

@darth

it wasnt a generalisation, it was an observation... check back at all the posts for yourself.

an observation based on what, posts by 4 SONY fans & maybe 1 or 2 other people less than 20

And it didn''t sound like an observation, it sounded like a statement given out in "fact" form

your "user sample" should be more than 4 - 8 people

I think what people need to realize here is the age factor and that it is not a good or a bad thing. The guys making the list are in their 30's and thus were influenced by a certain generation of consoles.

It is unfair to criticize or nullify somebody's opinion on the matter because they were not born at the time and didn't have the same experience others did. The fact is, if the people of the late 80's or 90's make this list in 10 -15 years time, the Top 5 is likely to be different with a greater slant towards Sony and the SNES. This is because during their childhood a different console(s) was front and center, which means their influence and what they look back on with nostalgia in the coming years will also be different.

2600 gets too much credit. NES didn't save the industry; the NES was the phoenix down that revived it from nonexistence. The NES was actually worse off than the 2600 ever was. Thanks to the crash, both retailers and consumers had a negative view of video games (terribly selling consoles and games for the retailers; terrible games for the consumers). The NES had to overcome the negative perception, and after doing so, proceeded to expand the market like negative before.

At the same time, the 2600, while responsible for a great majority of that initial growth back in the early 70s, was also responsible for a lot of the problems that led to the crash (ridiculously long life cycle, no quality protection, etc). A lot of people forget just how terrible most games were on the 2600, and they focus on the few shining examples of greatness.

EXACTLY as Wii_Master said

IGN's basis for the list is to be frank, muddled, confuzzled & random

this has led to me being disappointed by it.

Atari 2600 is so high as it changed the world....fine

Then why is the fastest selling home console of all time Wii.....in 10th.

why is the console that has brought in more newcomers to gaming than even PS1, PS2, NES even in 10th

They don't like its library or what it stands for?

" IGN has forged a list of the Top 25 Videogame Consoles of All Time, where we have selected and ranked the most influential systems in the history of gaming"

http://www.ign.com/top-25-consoles/

_______

its not based on what "they (IGN)" like

Its based on influence & influencial titles

so why is Wii not in the top 5

it has the TOP SELLING GAME EVER!

& why is PS1 not there

Clearly influence is not their only criteria, regardless of whether or not they say it is.

There. How about that.

no that won't do at all

@Kas

I agree, but the Wii has done enough in terms of what they are saying is their criteria to atleast be above "some consoles" which are above it

Possibly... but a lot of people probably see the Wii's innovation as the "wrong kind" of innovation.

In future generations I imagine the wii will be sitting at number 3 for motion controls as the primary control device and creating a cheap enough system to allow smaller companies to make profits and in general profits to be made during tough economic times.

Had the Wii not existed it's scary to think about what gaming would be like right now.   I mean people forget this but Wii games have funded a lot of the big HD games.   Without the Wii.... the HD systems library would be worse.

That's the kind of stuff that needs perspective though for most people.

After the top 2 you could probably say it was mostly library based.

You have to remember that the NES only revived the industry in the US

neither Japan or Europe ever had the great console crash

Excellent post

@Kasz

hmmm....your bring up a very interesting point with the "wii funds HD Games thing"

I guess it may be early for them to recognize the wii

but IGN....being a mainly a gaming site, should recognize this already.....its a shame they havn't

without a PS1 there wouldn't be an xbox 360 or PS2

so should it be ranked higher than them?

according to your logic yes

Why wouldn't there have been a PS2 or 360?

Sure there would of been.  They just wouldn't of been made by Sony or Microsoft.

They would of had different names.  The Sega Dreamcast could of just as eaisly took on the role the PS2 took on had the PS2 not existed.

the market won't have grown that much

SEGA would still be there

Micrsoft entered BECAUSE PLAYSTATION was dominating

so why is PS1 below them?

Because it didn't have Halo, Morrowind or Fable.

But it had Final Fantasy 7 :P

Also the NES was actually listed #1 in IGNs top 5.  Darth just phrased the title weird.
