Am I missing something, how is this odd?
Japan loves handhelds, and has shown it loves PSP as well as DS (just not quite as much) and that it loves new models and cool features around portable, interactive play.
The Go I always felt was a sure thing in Japan.
In US/UK, etc. the PSP has struggled and lost a lot of momentum and is launching under the label of 'expensive for early adopters' as a different experience, with the current PSP still available, I would therefore expect initial sales to be relatively modest.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
