Forums - Sales - PS3 most certainly undertracked.

@MikeB  Seriously, quite whining.

Here is a fact.  MikeB is relentless.  Both his detractors and his supporters would agree that he is entirely unstoppable in his mission.  Most of us see it as whining IMO, his supporters see him as a folk hero of sorts.

But to be sure.  If you see his posts as whining and you are a moderator here, there is only one solution to make it stop.  "Seriously, quit whining." is not going to do it.

Advocating one way or another entirely aside, this is just the way it is.

And did he happen to tell you the relative frequency with which they get PS3 and 360 shipments?  Without that information your big box/little box reasoning is completely meaningless.

Not to mention it gives you no idea how many units the corporate office ordered or have in warehouse inventory. Most local managers of retail chains not have access to that type of information.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

At the beginning of August, before the PS3 Slim was announced, Sony revealed they had *sold* 23.8 million PS3s. Whether you'd like to argue its shipped to retailers or sold to consumers, it doesnt matter.

This was a month ago, since then we had heard of Phat shortages leading up to the official launch of the PS3 slim. So even if you take Sony's official figure as shipped I find it extremely hard to believe that there are 500,000 PS3 phats sitting on shelves around the world like VGChartz claims.

I find it troubling that a site dedicated to tracking sales can ignore information like this.

No I dont expect VGChartz to change its numbers to match company releases like this, atleast go back and check your data. It seems pretty clear that VGChartz is off by atleast a a few hundred thousand.

Anyone with a reasonable explanation?

I find it hard to believe you're that hard up over 500k units in a total volume of over 23million. Not to mention last time I was at my local walmart there was an entire box/glass area full of phat PS3s, 9 that I could see and probably some in back.

Just let the fanboy in out go and I'm sure you can reason that there are plenty of places in this world PS3 phats could exist.

MikeB, what is your goal and is it worth this level of effort? Are you looking for a 400k adjustment to PS3? If you get it will it change anything?

I just do not see the point in complaining about an at most 2 percent difference in total lifetime sales that would not change anyone's view of how the market is behaving.

This is a sales website, I like discussing perspectives on this in a calm and polite manner.

I don't understand what the problem is. I just shared my perspective, can't handle it, don't read it.

PS3 vs 360 sales

PS3 has not been undertracked by VGChartz.
Username2324 started this controversial thread and Mike B has persistently fought a losing battle with his nonsensical big box/little box arguments.
Is arguing over less than 2% error rate even worth arguing over? 500,000/23 million ~ 2%

I have seen a lot of people making a lot of fuss about much smaller figures (for example selling a few thousand more than another platfrom for a week). Where are you then?

I am actually not creating a fuss, I am sharing calmly and politely my perspective.

I don't think the supermarket dig to that one guy was polite at all.  Nor when you came on here drunk, etc.  In fact you have at other times said you will not be polite to people.  You usually are calm, save the time you posted drunk.  But you often lace it with passive agressiveness and subtle trolling.  In that you are actually quite the the artist.  And again you are tireless and relentless in your mission.  You will likely calm down a bit for a few days or a week since someone from the site has called you out.  But sure as the sun rises every day, you will be back at it again before we know it.

I don't have a problem, I was asking you a direct question and giving my opinion on the possible answer. Also, I am quite capable of handling anything you have to say just fine and your smugness serves only to diminish your credibility. I asked you a simple question, so instead of getting pissy lets discuss it.

What is your goal in claiming that "the 360 is usually well overtracked and the PS3 significantly undertracked. "

Do you think if this shift was recognized it would make any difference to the perceived market position of any of the consoles? By your own calculations the PS3 is about ~450k under tracked in total sales to date [edit: I do not believe this but I am accepting it to simplify the discussion]. My opinion is that the difference we are discussing is not significant enough to have any impact on perceived momentum or market position. The difference, even if applied only to Europe where the race is closest and only over the last year, would not overcome the gap between PS3 and 360, let alone the Wii.

Do you think that Ioi and his team are not aware of these number you are quoting and you are doing them a service to point them out? That would be either absurd or insulting depending on your perspective considering that one set of number they produced and the other have been posted in so many public forums, including here, that you would have to try to miss them.

Are you trying to discredit the numbers? If so the error you are claiming, ~2 percent of total sales, would seem to me to be exceptionally accurate by any reasonable persons standards so your claim would be counter productive to your goals.

Are you trying to sow fear and doubt without actually making any real valid point as an attempt to influence the general perception of the PS3 and Sony? If so the reasonable and well thought out responses you are getting from many people will probably ensure that only those predisposed to your way of thinking will fall for it.

This leads me to the reason I asked the question, all the possible logical explanations I could come up with for why you continue to argue the original point, that there is a significant and chronic under tracking of PS3 and/or over tracking of 360, seem to have been effectively countered. What goal am I missing that you still think you can achieve or are you just being stubborn and refusing to admit your original point has been refuted?

Yes it's undertrack. PS3 sold 30mil so far.

@billsalias

Lets not ignore the other possible explaination.  That perhaps he does this all as some sad sort of sport.  He has been quite effective at contiuously drawing generally reasonable folks into the same arguments over and over, despite his well established pattern of pushing the limits, then once he wears out his welcome he retreats for a while.  Then he comes back not too long after with the same arguments that were previously dealt with.  His "smugness" that you describe is part of his long established M.O. in trolling.
