Moore on motion controlled FIFA

Doesn't think simply having a Natal version of FIFA is the right thing to do.

EA Sports president Peter Moore has told VideoGamer.com that he believes sports will play a large role in the early support for both Microsoft's Natal and Sony's PS3 motion controller. However, much of this will be through fun mini-games as we have seen with the Wii.

Asked if the publisher's market-leading FIFA franchise could incorporate Natal or Sony's motion wand, Moore said:

"Well I'm not sure that simply having a, let's say Natal from Microsoft, having a Natal version of FIFA is arguably the right thing to do. Are there some cool mini-games you can do as a Natal or motion controller from Sony, where you actually put the controller down maybe, you get up off the couch, and then there's a penalty competition? And maybe, and this is right off the top of my head, maybe, there's a penalty, instead of using the controller, you have to take the penalty?"

He continued: "The challenge is how do I interact inside that screen? How do I bring to life the ball outside of the screen? I think the simplest thing to do is maybe just take a penalty. Now do I know how to do that? Do I write code? No."

What Moore does expect to see is bite-sized experiences, similar to what happened with the Wii.

"I don't believe you're going to see early on a full game where you and I can play one on one. I don't think that's going to happen," said Moore. "It's going to be, as we saw with Wii, sports is going to play an interesting role, but it's going to be relatively bite-size types of games that are instantly fun."

Moore concluded: "It's going to be very interesting to see what develops. And we'll be there. Certainly EA Sports needs to play a role in gesture and motion controllers. We'll obviously be there."

I LOVEd his NATAL idea with FIFA, the penalties thing

If advertised right, this could help make Xbox 360 & NATAL sales skyrocket in the United Kingdom!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Is that possible to reproduce a penalty accuratelly on Natal's camera?

The camera is said to work only at 30 fps - I'm not shure about this number - and that's a little low to detect a kick motion isn't it?

So, in other words, Natal and Sony's motion control will not get many games taking advantage of them outside of simple mini-game collections (as was suggested after E3 several months ago) ...

Sounds like HD gaming fans should brace themselves for waves of motion minigames, much like they pointed and laughed at the Wii for.

Sony and Microsoft should just make a hybrid, natal with the stick, up to 120fps etc.

LAAAAAAAAAAME if you ask me. I have yet to see a point to motion controls in the HD consoles. I mean, seriously, an add-on to get up and pretend to kick a soccer ball? That's supposed to enhance your video game experience?

It is the right place to start though, for sports (which would obviously be a complicated genre for motion controlled games).

Outside of sports Microsoft (not necessarily third parties who aren't trying to push hardware) should be looking to make the kind of core games that should easily translate over to Natal, such as racing games.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Well as long as this means that motion controls will not me the main function of controls for either HD console than I am fine with that. Because I refuse to give up my standard controller.

The real question is if is that possible for a player to accurately kick a penalty if there's no ball, and your perception of the goalkeeper and net is a 2D representation with no real distance perception...

Motion control is for arcade games.  True 1:1 makes things way more difficult in game than in real life, unless you are inside some sort of virtual reality.

It'll be up to first party titles to make these things succeed then.. Hopefully for Microsofts sake, Rare can magically turn into a good developer again and Molyneux can actually deliver on his promises for once.

At least Sony have experience with Eyetoy and their controller seems more suited to core games.. We'll see how things go.. Natal has greater potential to be a breakout hit but Sony have greater potential to make AAA software for there's. Next year will be interesting for sure.
