Forums - Sales - People on forums are taking it for granted PS3 slim will destroy 360

I agree that we should take a wait and see approach.

But I haven't really seen any fanboys claiming victory just yet, all I've seen is that some peoples expectation for the slim are a bit high.

Sony fans get disappointed almost every time cause their expectations are normally at a far from sane height. LittleBigPlanet will be huge.

Funny most reasonable expectations put LBP at 3-4 million... It's still has GOTY edition this holiday and the greatest hits to look forward to.... Same with KZ2... people said it didn't meet expectations yet it exceeded them. The average first week expectations for KZ2 here was 690k

Have the 360 and PS3 ever been the same price before? I would imagine if the PS3 can manage top beat it when it's more expensive half the time it shouldn't have issues at the same price point.

The 360 is 199, the PS3 is 299.  They are not the same price.

The 360 Elite is now 299, just like the PS3, but they were both 399 until price cuts, so yes, the PS3 and 360 have had skus at the same price for a while.

Difference now is, PS3 was never mass market price, and now it is.

True but he was saying they were the same price, which they are not.

Certainly it will do better at 299 but I disagree that that's the mass market price.  The 360 wasn't doing gangbusters at 299, sales didn't really pick up until it hit 199.  199 is the mass market price point IMO.  Although the Wii has shown that 250 can do okay! :P

In any event, the 360 is still 100 bucks cheaper and for a lot of christmas shoppers that 100 makes a difference.

It doesn't matter, there has never been a PS3 this cheap and you will soon see the results of what that price means for it.

Also, the 360 was never $299 without a $199 model. We don't know how it would have performed had the $299 model only been available.

Are you joking?  The 360 was 299 at launch.

Ummm, no. It was $399.99 at launch, I should know, I bought one.

And I bought the Core version for 299.

"Microsoft has officially announced the launch price of the Xbox 360. As they have said all along, it will be available with and without the removable 20GB hard drive for $299 and $399 respectably. Here are the details.

$399 Premium Edition Xbox 360

The Premium Edition will cost $399 and come with a number of extra peripherals that would normally retail for $200 extra. It will also feature metalic detailing on the system itself which will distinguish it from the $299 version.

$299 Xbox 360 Core System

The Core System version of the Xbox 360 will retail for $299 and is a bare bones system that will only allow you to play games. It can, of course, be upgraded later with a hard drive to be a more fully featured system."

I love how Mass Market price was always considered sub $200 until the PS3 hit sub $300.

Also need to add the 360 did fine against the PS3 in 2007 during the holidays and no this wasnt because of Halo 3. The Halo 3 spike happened in September and October. Not November and December.  360 held its own precisely why it will again this year. The 360 has a less expensive model ($199 vs $299) just like back in 2007 ($279 vs $399) in addition to an SKU the same price as the PS3.

360 should continue to do fine, particularly in US. PS3 will also do fine at the new price point, particularly in Japan in Others.

The sun will continue to rise and set, etc. etc.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Well let me see, the PS3 fanboys have been saying that for years now, so what else is new ?

My favorite games for this gen:

1. Gears of War    2. MGS4    3. Killzone 2   4. Halo 3(Underated by many)      5. Mass Effect

Well they've been saying that the PS3 would own the 360 when it came out, again when they drop the price, again when MGS4 came out etc etc
It will be the same with the slim, it will still be in the bottom of sales and the Wii will still dominate while the 360 being close to the PS3 or a little higher.

Well, $299 is a mass market price. What are you saying, the Wii is too expensive for mass market? Yea, it certainly shows in the sales...

/sarcasm...

We all know that the Wii is a totally different beast and caters to a different market. Not to mention that the Wii does sell for $249 and includes what has been the #1 or #2 reason why the casual market wants a Wii.

The Wii is an example of that price range ($201-299) STILL being seen as mass market. That's my point, $299 has always been PlayStation's main selling point before price drops years later. PS1 and 2 saw MASSIVE sales at this price point, it's acceptable.

Found an old article about PS2 sales when the PS2 was reduced from $299 to $199.   This was mid May 2002. At that point the PS2 was on the market 2 years in Japan and 1.5 years in US and Europe.

Sony so far has shipped 30 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide and 7.9 million in the U.S.
