You could also try Empathy (also in the package manager) if you don't like either of those. I didn't like it much but some people do.

Pidgin is preinstalled on most recent Ubuntu versions; it should already be in the Applications menu.



If pidgin doesn't work out for you, you can also try meebo. As far as I know pidgin doesn't support webcamming, but meebo does with some other browser based technology. Personally though, I'm more used to pidgin's interface.
