Forums - Sony - A Few Things Sony needs to have for The PS4

They need to release a console that they don't need to remodel.

Sony has done this every gen they've been in the biz....

Anyway, I agree with the OP for the most part. I agree with one thing though, BC for at least PS2 & PS3 games should be in there. I just think that perhaps the PS3 will suffer with such a feature if the PS4 comes out swinging and tries to claw at marketshare as the PS2 was so beastly at obtaining.

I was going to add BC but Im not sure how they would go about it. Are they going to go Software Emulation or bring back the emotion engine which has been in every Sony console except for recent PS3s

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Backwards compatability. Why would anyone buy the PS4 if there were only like 3 games. If it was B/C, people could play the new PS4 games and there old PS3 games.

1) First and foremost, DO NOT GO FOR A BIG TECH LEAP. Just upgrade on the current PS3.

Shit, toss out the DDR3 and go for 2GB of XDR.

Improved Cell processor. I'm sure right now and fully working 8 SPU Cell at 6Ghz wouldn't be too much to manufacture over what the PS3 currently uses. Imagine 4 years from now.

Then of course there will be a GPU upgrade.

Go for a cheaper well build exterior like what the PS3 Slim. Oh, and we all didn't like the glossy finish btw... fingerprints, dust magnet, shows scratches from a single wipe if you don't use the proper cloth...

2) Make sure your main equipment comes with the system so that everything will be supported.

Seriously... the PSEye is an awesome tool, just look at Burnout, Eye of Judgement, the PSMotion controllers, Eyepet, GT5 and the smaller games on the PSN Store. It would have had so much more support or simply more uses in other games [Look at GT5 and Burnout] if it was packed in. Just look at what Sixaxis did for Folklore. SONY could push for my Sixaxis support... don't know why they don't... Here's some accessories the system should come with.

Your standard Video Cables and AC cable etc.

The standard controller bring back Sixaxis but more accurate.[and I say this because I feel motion controls should stay OPTIONAL]

PSEye, or what ever the next one will be called... but will we really need another? Doubt it.

The PS Motion or what ever it will be called. [So we know it will be supported]

You may be wondering why I didn't put "Headset". Well that's because the PSEye is much better. Pics up my voice from anywhere in the room, has 4 microphones actually. Most importantly, unlike the official SONY head set it blocks out sound coming from your game. In an inclosed room the only sound getting through that mic is your voice, no matter how load you're playing. Even if you're using custom soundtracks. [Noticed this with killzone2]

This would all mean that these products are on a bigger scale of mass production, meaning they will cost you less to produce, while you don't really have to cut prices for them by much at all . Speaking of money...

3) If your launch price isn't 399 or less... DON'T BOTHER.

You weakened your brand greatly with the launch price of the PS3. It just shows that there aren't that many people willing to pay big, no matter how much the device can do. Bottom line, they see it as a game system first and foremost [I see it as much more, but i'm not the average Joe]. So they aren't going to compare with the price of anything except.... YOU GUESSED! ANOTHER GAME SYSTEM.

Speaking of price, since you will be using the PS3's architecture for the most part, development budgets shouldn't sky rocket like they did this gen. Meaning you have the option of NOT increasing game prices by another 10$. Look at the Wii. I honestly believe that a big part of the Wii's appeal is the price of the games. It sounds nice to say "Hey, 100 bucks will get me 2 completely brand new Wii games". We PS360 owners can't say that unless we're talking budget titles... 60$ seems to work though, no need to push your luck any further.

4) Stick with Blu-Ray

Just do it... there's no reason not too... The 2x Drive in the PS3 isn't fast enough though... a 4x Drive wouldn't cost much right now over the current. I don't see why the PS4 can't launch with an 8x Drive. Also, 50GB's is plenty, and there are already 100GB discs.

I think it's a given they'll stick with Blu-Ray, but I just wanted to put this out on the list anyway. It would be 100% pointless/stupid to switch to something else.

This! Especially 3 and 4. I think Sony was humbled this gen when they saw the reaction the PS3 price point and I hope pray that Motion controls don't take over gaming completely I do know that quite a bit of gamers would rather have it as an option then the new standard controller. And Yes Sony needs to stick with Blu-Ray and ignore things like HVD and what ever may come along in the next 3 years. Upgrade the Blu-ray drive keep the costs down for them and the consumers and they should be fine, even if they come in last place again, at least this time it wont cost them as much money if they are smart about it.

Not as much as people would hope. Even now, they won't bring BC back to the PS3 even though so many people want it so badly.

If Sony don't adopt motion controls as standard then they'll quickly become irrelevant in the market. The paradigm shift has occured, I'm actually worried about Sony for the next generation. The way Sony and Microsoft are handling their new controls tells me that Microsoft understands the values far better than Sony which makes PlayStation an endangered species..

Also @vitoaf27: So I guess all those people who bought a Wii aren't gamers? You know, the 'casual gamers' who only care about pick-up-and-play games and not high definition cut scenes? It's also interesting to note that if Zelda Wii were unveiled with no motion control support the up roar would be insane!

This. I'm worried about them for next gen, as well.

Well, we don't have to worry about motion controls taking over. Sony can use it as standard with ps4, there is always going to exist a classic controller accessory that works with almost all games.

GT is used as concept game for ps brand, don't having it in the first year was one of the biggest mistakes sony could make.

Actually Sony is probably working on getting B/C back up on the PS3 via Emulation. We've seen pics of PS2 games on the PS Store. And we also know Sony took the option out because people kept complaining about the price.

What SONY needs to do for PS4...

1) Launch price of $399, with SONY selling the console at break-even or slight loss (any more than a $15 loss is unacceptable)
2) More system wide features - custom music in every game, cross-game chat, etc
3) BC with past systems, sure PS1 games will play on PS4 -- but we also need PS2 and PS3 games to play on the console.
4) Hardware should be like PS3.5 -> upgraded CELL, new GPU similar enough to the RSX to easily emulate PS3 games, 2gb of CPU RAM, 4gb of GPU RAM (aim for DDR4), 802.11n WiFi, 3x USB 3.0 ports (2 at the front one at the back)
5) 1st party Software in the 12 months following launch needs to be amazing. GT6?, Ratchet and Clank game, Resistance game, Naught Dog game, Sucker Punch game, etc. two big launch games + one big 1st party game per month for the first 12 months.
6) Motion controller option - bundle the system with 1x Dual Shock 4 and 1x Motion controller.

Now I don't know how you guys feel but if history repeats itself we should have another console generation within the next 2-3 years (2011-2013) and while we don't know how the world will look like with the recession but I would just like to start a conversation on different things Sony should and will need to include in order for their PS4 to be more successful then the PS3.

1. $299.99 LAUNCH PRICE- All Sony systems except the PS3 launched at $299.99. Sony needs to make sure the PS4 is at or close to this price point in order to make sure they hit the ground running.

2. Launch before or shortly after MS/Ninty's next console. The landscape of this gen might have been a little different if Sony didn't give that head start to MS but whats done is done. Time to make sure it doesn't happen again.

3.  2001 was the year that really allowed Sony's PS2 to gain steam world wide with the release of MGS2, FFX and GT3. I think this time around Sony needs to make sure that GT6/GT7 needs to launch day and date for the PS4 in order to gain an extra foothold for the PS4. Hell if you can't release date and day at least release it a year after the system launches and not 3.

4. Give the PSPGO option- Keep hard media but also give people the option to download the majority of their games just like the PSPGo

5. Don't bankrupt yourself. Sony would have been way more competitive if the PS3 didn't send them into the red as much as it did. Sony should recycle and upgrade most aspects of the PS3 and use it for the PS4. Keep costs down and consumer prices down.

6. Make Motion control an Option and NOT the Standard. While its a nice thing to have A Lot and I mean a lot of people would prefer to have the standard controller with the option to purchase a motion controller something like Eye Toy where gamers have the option and a set of games dedicated to take advantage of the motion controller while others are more traditional play-through.

This is all IMO of course

Cool I love this stuff.

$300 is good but I'm willing to fork over $400 on a launch price, as long as it's worth the money.
I agree there should be much better titles in the first couple of years of launch.
@#6 - Definitely, I've said this before. I don't mind motion controls as long as they don't control every aspect of the system.

Oh and PS1/PS2/PS3 Backwards Compatibility :D.

We've got a while though, I don't see a reason to upgrade any time soon.
