1) First and foremost, DO NOT GO FOR A BIG TECH LEAP. Just upgrade on the current PS3.
Shit, toss out the DDR3 and go for 2GB of XDR.
Improved Cell processor. I'm sure right now and fully working 8 SPU Cell at 6Ghz wouldn't be too much to manufacture over what the PS3 currently uses. Imagine 4 years from now.
Then of course there will be a GPU upgrade.
Go for a cheaper well build exterior like what the PS3 Slim. Oh, and we all didn't like the glossy finish btw... fingerprints, dust magnet, shows scratches from a single wipe if you don't use the proper cloth...
2) Make sure your main equipment comes with the system so that everything will be supported.
Seriously... the PSEye is an awesome tool, just look at Burnout, Eye of Judgement, the PSMotion controllers, Eyepet, GT5 and the smaller games on the PSN Store. It would have had so much more support or simply more uses in other games [Look at GT5 and Burnout] if it was packed in. Just look at what Sixaxis did for Folklore. SONY could push for my Sixaxis support... don't know why they don't... Here's some accessories the system should come with.
Your standard Video Cables and AC cable etc.
The standard controller bring back Sixaxis but more accurate.[and I say this because I feel motion controls should stay OPTIONAL]
PSEye, or what ever the next one will be called... but will we really need another? Doubt it.
The PS Motion or what ever it will be called. [So we know it will be supported]
You may be wondering why I didn't put "Headset". Well that's because the PSEye is much better. Pics up my voice from anywhere in the room, has 4 microphones actually. Most importantly, unlike the official SONY head set it blocks out sound coming from your game. In an inclosed room the only sound getting through that mic is your voice, no matter how load you're playing. Even if you're using custom soundtracks. [Noticed this with killzone2]
This would all mean that these products are on a bigger scale of mass production, meaning they will cost you less to produce, while you don't really have to cut prices for them by much at all . Speaking of money...
3) If your launch price isn't 399 or less... DON'T BOTHER.
You weakened your brand greatly with the launch price of the PS3. It just shows that there aren't that many people willing to pay big, no matter how much the device can do. Bottom line, they see it as a game system first and foremost [I see it as much more, but i'm not the average Joe]. So they aren't going to compare with the price of anything except.... YOU GUESSED! ANOTHER GAME SYSTEM.
Speaking of price, since you will be using the PS3's architecture for the most part, development budgets shouldn't sky rocket like they did this gen. Meaning you have the option of NOT increasing game prices by another 10$. Look at the Wii. I honestly believe that a big part of the Wii's appeal is the price of the games. It sounds nice to say "Hey, 100 bucks will get me 2 completely brand new Wii games". We PS360 owners can't say that unless we're talking budget titles... 60$ seems to work though, no need to push your luck any further.
4) Stick with Blu-Ray
Just do it... there's no reason not too... The 2x Drive in the PS3 isn't fast enough though... a 4x Drive wouldn't cost much right now over the current. I don't see why the PS4 can't launch with an 8x Drive. Also, 50GB's is plenty, and there are already 100GB discs.
I think it's a given they'll stick with Blu-Ray, but I just wanted to put this out on the list anyway. It would be 100% pointless/stupid to switch to something else.
