Forums - Nintendo - Pachter at it again - Speaks about Wii's situation in light of HD prices

"Everyone knows why a SD card does not compare to a hardrive."

He did NOT claim it compared to a hard drive. If you're basing this whole thing on what you thought he claimed, you need to read that comment again, and some previous posts to get the context.

I think that he forgot to factor in that the Wii has built in Wifi as well, and now with SD card streaming that replaces a need for a HD.

You don't really believe that, do you?

Yeah actually I do. Its a good storage solution and the transfer rate isnt terrible. Actually, I don't believe it - I KNOW it.

And it's not as though a hard drive for a game system is used like on a computer. Most of the functions for a gaming system HDD can be done with a solid state storage dive, which means SD cards.

^^^ If I can download/install games to the SD card and play them from the SD card without much data transfer lag, it does everything I expect a HDD to do - except generate heat.

The need for a HDD involves there being something to download to it.... the only thing the Wii needs memory for is:

Game saves
Channels
(both of the above still easily fit onto the Wii memory unless you have more than 50 Wii games with the largest memory saves)

Game specific channels (again, unless you have an immense collection will still fit onto Wii memory)

VC and Wiiware games (the entire collection wouldn't exceed a 2GB card)

maximum 100 MP3/ACC (is it ACC? well whatever the file name is)
maximum 1000 photos

-------

I have a 1 GB card (cost me £6) which has ~100 music files and about 50 photos (though I don't use the photo channel so I could delete them) it also has 10 VC games and 7 Wiiware games on it, and it is barely 1/4 full (and most of that space is the music and photos)

@twroo - From my understanding, entire games on WiiWare are installed directly to the SD cards now and streamed from them, so its more than the game saves, etc.

You forgot about how overpriced they are too.

I don't understand what you are saying.

As for the games... I think anything you store on your SD card is not played directly from it, but when you click on it, it is transferred to the Wii memory before playing (which takes about 2-3 seconds on the smaller games, and about 10-15 seconds for the biggest games like Majora's Mask or World of Goo)

@pyro - what is overpriced? HDDs or SD cards?

@Twroo - no, Nintendo is pushing out an update to play directly off of the sd cards, no need to transfer to the internal Wii memory. It was announced a few weeks back.

Propriety HDDs.
