While back to school shopping at a local Giant Tiger (Your All Canadian Family Discount Store!!!!) I wandered into the games section, and underneath all the crap I found Contra 4 for 19.94, now I debated to myself, I'v never played a Contra game and all I know of the series is what I'v read on the internet. But me being a gamer and an impulse buyer picked it up. I couldent beat the first level on easy, but I know Ill get better, hard games dont phase me, but what Id like to know is, is this game and the entire series any good? Or do I now own a lackluster game?

The game is hard for many, but other than that it is great. After a while you can blaze through the game.

I've only played the first one on the NES, good game! One of the best 2 player games on the NES imo.

Contra 4 is good, but I prefer Contra for the NES. I'm not sure which is harder. I never really got into the other Contra games (mostly due to either not having money or not really knowing they existed back then). Contra NES is one of my all-time favorite games probably due to the extremely high difficulty challenge.

I can beat Contra 4 on easy, and with a lot of continues I can probably make it through normal but the game is hard. I switched to the challenges, and then sort of put it to the side and haven't really played my DS much other than getting a new game and beating it then putting the DS back down.

If you can beat the challenges, you can play the original Contra on NES but it isn't the same, but it would give you an idea of what it is like.

Ultimately, the game comes down to memorizing where all the bad guys are and when they will show up and just run through the stage real fast while shooting the entire time.

Contra 4 is a pretty good game, and you can unlock the original. Contra 3 on SNES is also one of the best co-op games ever.

I may just get it. I love a difficult game. I heard Trauma Center was supposed to be hard but it wasn't that hard. The main reason I bought, now I buy it because it is ub3r awesome.

Is Contra on the Virtual Console? If so, which would be harder, Contra or Contra 4?

@ dtewi: I say both. Why? Because you gotta go through the levels first to see what's so difficult about them. I mean, the enemies in both games move the same (left to right, right to left...) and appear from the left-side of the screen to trick you sometimes... so there's no real difference in difficulty between both games. No bosses are especially harder than the other, it's all about building a strategy for different levels.

Also, the Spread Gun is your best friend.

Oh, and Contra is on the Virtual Console in Europe only I think.
