Forums - General - Possible BIOS Virus?

I've got the weirdest problem with my computer.

Whenever I power it off... when it powers back on it won't power back on.

For example i"ll power it back on and then it will shut down.

I will repower it back on and it will say "Your computer has failed to start.... blah blah".

Then when I hit safe mode... it powers off as soon as it starts loading.

I end up fixing this by going into the BIOS and messing with the boot drives.  Swap the order... add or remove the order it boots up from, restore emergency settings... stuff like that...

and then it works. Which to me makes no sense.  That shouldn't change anything... espiecally when it's somewhat random what i'm doing.

It makes me think I have a virus that screws up my BIOS and by changing the BIOS it sends it back to a "correct" one.  Does that make any sense at all?

Any other possibilties here?

Sounds crappy, I have no clue what it is.

When you get the warning about the computer failing to start does it mention anything about operating systems? I know it sounds odd but could your boot drive with your OS have changed priority somehow?

Ask soleron, he seems to be pretty hot on these matters.

Nope.  Just the usual message that happens when your computer shuts down.  Like when there is a power outage and stuff.

You might have a part going bad. How old is this computer?

If you can't find anything with virus/malware scanners then backup your data and format it.  If the problem persists you'll know it's hardware related and can begin looking into finding a new computer.

Wait, you own Emachine? lol, then a part really could be going bad. Emachine sucks and I had one before and it crapped out on me. Try getting another brand if you have the money and just work on the Emachine for as long as possible.

Yeah, that's my current plan.  The only two options I had were really crappy at the time.  Sucked.

As for Avast.  I use that all the time.
