Forums - Microsoft - Further reason to believe the 360's sales are inflated due to RROD.

You guys forgot to throw in the X360's 3 year warranty. Every time I've heard of someone buying a replacement unit, they get theirs repaired and then sell it on e-bay. So in reality, people are still playing the systems. The PS2 had Disc Read Errors and the only way to get that fixed was by buying a new unit. If you want to talk about a system with inflated sales, you should be talking about the PS2.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Here's what I don't personally get.

Let's assume these numbers are true, and that Xbox sales numbers are inflated because of people buying replacement consoles.

What does that say about Sony, that people would rather go out and just replace a console that bricked on them, maybe three or even four times, than they would buy a PS3?

Seems like a pretty scathing indictment of the market's opinion of Sony if people are willing to spend more than twice the price of a PS3 to keep replacing a 360.

If I was a Sony fanboy, I would try my hardest to pretend this wasn't true.

Wow. That makes the attach ratio even more impressive. Thanks for bringing this irrefutable proof to our attention.

It should also be noted that last generation, each console really sold fairly equally, between 20-30 million. The PS2's other 110 million in sales comes from replacement consoles.

I have a friend who bought 4 ps2's because of DVD drive issues, so let's say 140/4 it's oh look there were only 30 million real ps2 users.

I think Ms would not count repaired consoles as new sales.

Here's a guy who really seems to like the 360. No reason to assume he isn't telling the truth or has any sort of anit-Microsoft bias. Acouple of little sentences from him convince me further that the 360's sales numbers are inflated by multiple purchases by the same person to replace defective consoles.

"I have had two 360's fail on me and am currently working on my third one. When my third one dies and if the Game Informer survey is any indication, it will. I will run right out and buy my fourth 360 without hesistation."

I have seen this kind of anecdotal evidence in blog after blog and message board after message board. To what extent the numbers are inflated is up for debate (probably difficult or impossible to prove), but clearly there are people who have bought multiple consoles. I believe the difference in the number of unique users of the PS3 and 360 is much smaller than the pure sales numbers would have us believe.

On a site like this based on sales numbers, I think this is a subject that needs to be discussed from time to time...in a civilized manner of course. :)

A random blog - yawn.

Thanks for earning a spot on my 'Ignore poster' list!

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

The PS2 in the only console I've had die on me

My fat PS2 died and was replaced with a slim version.

So what ever the PS2 is said to have sold take away 1

Lol. I love the sarcasm in this thread. The man brings up an entirely fair point. Sure all consoles fail at one time or another, I've seen PS3's failure between 2% and 10%(By Game Informer).. Yet I've seen Xbox 360 failure rate between 33% and 53%(by Game Informer). This statistics cannot be denied, to do so would show true fanboyism. I surmise that the difference between unique PS3 and Xbox 360 owners in smaller than thought, but not incredibly smaller, maybe 7 mil difference instead of 8 mil? And yes, this does prove that the attachment rate on the 360 is higher than the PS3.

Use logic man. Look at which ones sells more games. Also Xbox 360 has a piracy issue...PS3 doesn't. Yet xbox does move about 20-30% more software every week.

What? Are you serious? Do you not read? Where in my post did I deny that the Xbox sells less than the PS3? To the contrary, I said the attachment rate on the 360 is higher than the PS3. Let me bold it out for you. This means it moves more software than the PS3! All I am saying that the gap PS3 vs 360 may be a bit smaller than people say it is, nothing more.

I really don't think the failure rate makes that much of a difference. Most people will get it fixed when it breaks; not buy a new one.

There is the extended warranty, but some places that wouldnt even matter. Here in Norway consumer law gives us 5 years warranty on electronics products like these (and there are similar laws elsewhere in Europe), so it doesnt really matter what the manufacturer warranty is; they have to follow the law. If it breaks due to a design flaw, they have to fix it, replace it or give you your money back.

I realize that for Americans tho, extended warranty is VERY important in the case of the 360.

We've known that for years but the gamefaqs posters bring it up every so often.
