Forums - Microsoft - No Matchmaking for ODST Firefight...WTF?

Do you actually use the matchmaking for Horde? The entire point of the experience for both Horde and Firefight is to replicate the LAN feel and just to be able to jump into a game without worrying about meeting the usual d-bags you see so often online. I have not once used matchmaking for Horde and so this news doesn't change my opinion on the game at all. I guess if you heavily used matchmaking for Horde it will effect you but I just can't see myself enjoying the mode and experiencing the comraderie I have with my friends with total strangers.

I agree that playing with friends with Horde is better, but I rarely have 3 friends online who have Gears 2, let alone want to stop what they are doing and play.  I have actually played 95% of my Horde matches through matchmaking.  I have found 80% of the matches are entertaining and you meet some nice people playing that way.  I imagine it will happen the same way with ODST for me.  I will never have 3 people online who are available to play Firefight.  Especially after CoD MW 2 comes out.  They should have given gamers the choice, but from what I have read, it would have been a massive code change due to Firefight using the co-op engine.

http://kokugamer.com/2009/08/23/seven-things-you-may-not-know-about-halo-3-odst/

These days, we face a wall of information…sometimes we miss or forget the little things. So we’ve scoured videos, the Bungie community and more to bring you – in true Bungie fashion – seven little titbits of info on Halo 3: ODST that your average Halo fan may not know. Very minor spoilers included:

  • Engineers will feature - With ODST’s achievements apparently leaked, two of them are to do with engineers – the long talked about, and rarely seen, covenant race. The Engineers recently made their first official in-game Halo appearance in Halo Wars, but this will mark the first time we get to blow them up in a Halo FPS. They are quite passive and, as the achievements suggest, you can either leave them be or kill them all…
  • No matchmaking for Firefight - Unfortunately it seems you will have to rely on your friends, or recent players, list to play ODST with anyone…for Firefight is based upon the co-op model of Halo 3, according to Bungie Producer Curtis Creamer.
  • Gold-armoured Hunters to appear? - The Bungie community has long been rife with rumours about tougher versions of existing enemies appearing. The covenant’s ranks are presented to the player in the form of varying colours. A Bungie employee (seen at the bottom of this thread) has all but confirmed that we’ll be seeing gold hunters in the game. Here’s a pic, someone has taken from the recent Vidoc, of what appears to be such a beast. We’d hate to take them on in Legendary…
  • The Announcer Guy Returns – While Firefight is a form of co-op, Bungie have still managed to find some space for The Announcer Guy: Halo’s long-standing commentator (i.e. the guy who says ‘Overkill!!’ etc.). In this vid, we see that the players get a few medals without a peep from the announcer…but he can’t seem to contain himself and eventually says ”Reinforcements”. Due to the mass amount of enemies, The Announcer Guy could become quickly annoying…so kudos to Bungie for fixing this while also keeping him around; it just wouldn’t be a Halo FPS without him.
  • No Elites - Yup, there will be no Elites. Many of us may have forgotten this sad news, but we’re here to remind you of it all over again. Bungie revealed that ODST would be Elite-less back in January of this year, when Urk attempted to break the news gently in their Weekly Update. While it’s all to do with consistency with the story ark, it’s not like Sgt. Johnson should be on Earth as a playable character in Firefight…is it Bungie? Then again, it wouldn’t surprise us if he cloned himself to preserve his awesomeness.
  • Only two players per console…even in Firefight – This is an unfortunate one, due to the fact that Firefight is, again, a co-op mode.  Since it’s built on the co-op model of Halo 3, the game will have the limits that Halo 3’s co-op has…and Firefight is included. That means in order to play on the same screen as four friends, you’ll have to System Link a couple of Xboxs together with two copies of the game. A little disappointing, but this also applies to the similar Horde mode in Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead as well.
  • No Dual Wielding -  According to some things we’ve read on the Bungie forms, dual wielding will not feature. This is due to the limitations of being an ODST rather than a Spartan, according to Bungie’s Design Director Paul Bertone. Yet this is somewhat puzzling…the troopers can lift chainguns off their mounts and carry them about with absolute ease. Sorry to be sexist here, but I fail to see how Dare, the female ODST, could carry that thing about with such consistency…let alone one of the males.

*********************************************************

This really pisses me off.

Onto the thread.

I'm glad Engineers will finally make an appearence. They would need to be in the game because they scavage around inspecting Human Technology and they sometimes fix it. One of them during the novels repaired Master Chief's armor and then they blasted the Engineers brains over the floor because it may have leaked the technology to the Covenant. New Mombasa's ruins would be Heaven for a Engineer.

Gold Hunters look bullshit. I'm positive it's just the Sun lighting effects of the map tinting their reflective armor golden. Look at the rest of the map, it also has a gold tint.

Elite's not being in the game is fine. They all left with the Prophet of Regret when he slipspaced jumped during Halo 2 to Delta Halo. Brutes were dropped into the city after the Elites left to mop up what defenses were left and secure the rest of the city. Remember the Rookie was unconcious in his Drop pod for over 6 hours after touchdown. There was plenty of time for the Elite's to leave. Anyway you will get your Elite ass kicking fill from Reach.

2 player Split screen is fine. Remember ODST has higher res textures and some other things and Firefight will have alot more enemies on screen at once while still running on the Halo 3 engine, a few sacrifices have to be made.

No duel wielding is fine. It makes sense for a ODST. I think only one ODST can carry turrets and that's the heavy weapon specialist. During firefight mode though I think everything goes. You can use alienweapons and carry turrets but this is only for gameplay reasons and to make firefight more fun. It would be pretty lame if you were limited to what you could use during firefight.

Firefight is not Canon and that's why Sgt Johnson can appear there and ODST's are buffed up :)

That's why I'm sticking with Gears 2 and its horde mode -- no firefight with random people == no sales from me.

LOL.  Yeah, I guess you are right.  When it comes out I will start an ODST Firefight thread or something.  I will go ahead and add you.

As for the other things mentioned in the OP.  They do not matter to me,  just the matchmaking thing.

So there won't be any quick match for fire fighting? Cause my understanding for match making is the whole non ranked and ranked process looking for people who are your similiar level/zone. I'm guessing they will have a quick match choice atleast.

If not you guys can add me The King Bading

It's just that simple.

This does kind of suck though. I understand that we will still be able to play and enjoy it but I think for a lot of people it may be a deal breaker. What's worse is that it took this long to find this out. Only 2 player split screen as well? Now in order to see my team of Johnsons realized I'm gonna have to buy a 20GB hard drive and fire up the 360 that's been sitting in my basement for four months. Sans plasma HD for me I guess, 27" cathode ray here I come.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.
