Natal plots 48 different points on a person's body, such as hands, feet and elbows, to create a wire-frame virtual manikin that mimics a person's movements.

do we know where those 48 points are located?  A lot of people talked up the possibilities of natal however, everyone seems to igore the part that natal doesn't track every part of your body (as least as far as information provided to the 360 is concerned).  I'd like to know how well natal tracks your hands,...will it track your individual fingers (22 points by my count) or just the hand location (2 points, left and right)?

Just curious, where did you hear the bolded?

I had not heard anything like that, but quite the opposite, that it DOES track every part of your body (via the wireframe mapping of specific points).

I remember reading that they had enough resolution for finger gestures (things like pinching) and they were working on them. If the points are 48 in total, then of course they are not tracking each phalanx of each finger, but that's probably overkill. A lot could be done just by tracking the extremity of each finger relative to your wrist.

I had heard this as well.  Perhaps they are giving developers options in regards to this though.  Such as different modes of detection.

i don't know about natal it just doesn't look like fun and i personally think sony's has more potential and how would you turn in fps games and how would you walk or run.... and imagine just pretending shooting a gun in front of your tv going...it would look crazy. but so far i love Ninty motion plus....

Microsoft could always release a controller accessory or fake prop such as a gun with a few buttons that natal can pick up, I'm willing to bet it would only cost around $20/£10 considering the expensive technology is already in natal.

On the rail FPS's like Time Crisis and the new Resident Evil coming out for the Wii would work fine with Natal. You could lean to dodge and form a gun shape with your hand and fire the imaginary trigger with your finger etc. Arthritis comes included.

Still waiting on interesting software. Ricochet looks much like the balance board game from Wii Fit with more freedom of movement.

"And, yes, you can even log in and play Natal in the dark"

Penis recognition confirmed!

lmfao, didnt even think of that, just think of the games they could make for that...or rather...dont...lol

Oh, I have been.

First I'll pop in Milo & Kate, head over to the pond, and dip it in the water to put those stupid fish in their place.

Next it's over to Paint Party, where I make an elephant all by myself!

Finally, we'll wrap things up with an invigorating game of Ricochet. Sure, Kudo is pretty good at it by now, but I'm confident he'll have nothing on me. Five limbs > four. I easily win the tournament in the Gamerscore League. Glory everlasting!

Unfortunately I don't think Natal has the processing power to map the final 49th joint on the male body let alone the 49th and 50th joint of the female body. Let's threaten to boycott Natal untill Microsoft add the extra processing power for the for the 49th joint

I would love to play Virtual Snooker with Natal +

I think you are confused at what I meant.  It does track everypart of your body as far as head to toe is concerned...that doesn't mean it tracks every part of your body.  there are 38 joints in your fingers alone - since we know that your body is reduced to a wireframe of 48 points is a pretty safe assumption that natal will not track all 38 finger joints.

it is basically a resolution issue, when you reduce a humans image down to just 48 points a lot of the finer details are lost which in turn limits what you can do with natal.  I remember someone getting all excited for a dragon ball (?!? or some other franchise i couldn't care less about) where a bunch of magic spells are cast by making specific hand guestures.  this person was all excited about a natal game that would allow for 1:1 capture of those hand guestures to cast their respective spells.  I don't think that is possible with the level of resolution this 1st gen natal will be able to caputure.

Got you - thanks for the clarification.

I had heard (as someone noted above) that they could detect motions as fine as a pinch of the fingers.  That being said, I think you have a great point...the ability with which it can track motion, and more importantly how that info is used in game design, is going to dictate the functionality of the system as a whole, and subsequently the price they will be able to charge for it.

I wonder if they will show any more on it at TGS?

I actually count 30 joints in my fingers and maybe 34 if you count the wrist. But lets assume that 38 is the number in the fingers. So we need 2 for wrists, 2 for elbows, 2 for shoulders, 1 for neck(maybe actually the chin) 2 for knees, 2 for ankles, and 2 for the waist movement. So we're at 51 total. Not too far off, really.

Not actually knowing anything about where the 48 points are located I would guess at bare minimum.

3 for the head.  (3 because I want to be able to know which direction the head is facing)

2 for the shoulders.

2 for elbows.

2 for wrists.

2 for waist.

2 for knees.

2 for ankles.

2 for toes.

6 for hands. (bare miniimum requirement to track direction just like in the head)

1 for neck.

--------------------

24 of the 48 points.  not sure where the other 24 points are but i'd guess hands and face.  wish i knew exactly where all the points are though...
