what about the fact that a percentage of 360s fail and are thus re-purchased on more than one occasion? do those purchases count too? I have a friend who's bought 3 of them already.

To be fair, that number is based on the first half year of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sales. VGChartz has it at 18 million.

The audience for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are not the same.
