Forums - Nintendo - Developers 'Nervous' About Making Wii Games

Yes, the Wii is the highest selling console. Right behind the DS, the PSP, and now even the 360.

But it's still doing well, I'll give it that.

Two other thoughts on this matter.

1. If Wii sales in Japan are cause for concern -- and they are still greater than PS3 and 360 sales combined -- what does that mean for other consoles' sales?

2. Any gueses what development houses might have said this? I have only seen partial quotes from the article that started this off and none of them give any indication that those making the quotes had to do so for atribution. (Techmo and Square-Enix's MMO unit come to mind).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I don't have time to read the whole thing, but has anyone pointed out yet that so far Ubisoft has had two million selling games? or that in Japan, the Wii currently has the highest selling third party game on a home console this gen?

Sorry to question ur authority stof, but those were near launch games.

That's true, but Rayman had terrific legs and continued really nice sales. Red Steel was a different case. I'm fairly confident that the game would have had much better long term sales if it wasn't so...um... Red Steel. But since then, what have the major games been?

There have been some bad signs for third party Wii support. Specifically the poor sales of multiplatform sports titles. But in terms of solid exclusive efforts, we really don't have much to go on yet. We will soon though, but I have a feeling that they'll turn out pretty well.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Some Third party devleopers really are cowards and fools. Not oly have they apparently not learned their lesson from the DS but now they're back peddling on previous promises to support the Wii. And of course, early rushed attempts at games haven't rewarded them for their hurried and sloppy efforts so all the more reason for them to be warry.

I guess the Wii will have to prove itself just like the PlayStation did and hold its own for a while before we see full support. The real question is though, do developers have any other choice other than the Wii at this point? The 360 with its lack of penetration in the East and the PS3 with its high development cost and low returns, its really in their best interest to make the Wii work.

It has the user-base, the gimicky controls, the power of the Nintendo games to carry it, and low development costs.  It seems like a fairly safe platform.  As soon as game designers can put the past and their former expectations behind them, I think we'll see some quality support.

there's one or two third parties setting an example for the rest to follow - Capcom is the new third party Nintendo and I reckon RE4, REUC, Zak and Wiki and Monster Hunter 3 all have the potential to be million sellers, top this off with EA releasing one or two gems (MOH 2 with it's 32 players online) and with the new Konami IGN video of pro evolution - this looks like it's going to be fantastic and a totally different challenge to the other formats so much it may just be the first third party Wii system seller for a lot of europe.

Slowly the bar will get raised by these third parties and behind these are project Rygar, Soul Calibre legends and Red Steel 2 is obviously on the horizon next year so the bar will raise gradually along with it's install base.

Remember in North America this week 7 wii titles were third party.

Those people that think they're perfect give a bad reputation to us who are...

"With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, but I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that." - Phil Harrison, Sony
