One unnamed president of a developer told Nikkei: "The Wii is like the 'Billy's Boot Camp' weight-loss program on DVD. People bought it out of curiosity, and it's likely a lot of them haven't used it". |
I realize the Wii is the cheapest of the current generation, but even so -- people don't spend $300+ out of curiosity and then never use it. 20 or 30 bucks for a DVD fitness training program, sure, 300 bucks on a Wii and at least one game, I don't think so.
See, I would understand where developers are coming from if they had a more sensible approach. Instead of blaming the Wii for flopped games, they need to take a step back and be humble for 5 seconds, and realize that just because Wii Sports and Wii Play are selling like hotcakes doesn't mean you can throw a game together in a few months and expect people to pay $50 for it. There are some developers out there who are saying things like "perhaps we've misread the audience's tastes" or "we're just not sure what these new gamers want", and I can sympathize with those feelings. Nintendo's blue ocean strategy means that the Wii is venturing into uncharted waters. Developers who don't know what to expect should do their research and get some creative juices flowing, not grumble and point fingers.
