people are really that "senseless"

cheaper to build but also sell at cheaper price

= no effect on direct money on hardware !!!!

Well, if the system cost 100 dollars less, but the cost of the console has been reduced by more than 100 dollars, than it seems there would be a change. No?

Not when we don't know how much the costs were reduced.  And not when the initial costs were shown to have a $50 loss per console.  A $50 loss, would mean they have to reduce costs another $150 to break even on the Slim.

And since there really is no telling what that 70% figure really is relating to, we can't know for sure.  If it meant 70% from the initial cost of the production PS3's, it could still be costing them $300 or more to produce the Slim.
