I'll repeat what I posted on another thread. The reason as I recall why Sony allowed linux to be installed was to get the PS3 classified as a personal computer which allowed it to skirt certain taxation loophole in other countries(European countries mostly) versus being classified as a consumer electronic device. My guess is that the loophole is closed or doesn't exist anymore.

I haven't in any of my posts mentioned sales or stated this would adversely affect them so I don't see what your point is.  I said it was a niche feature which indicates I know it's a minority who would use the system.  I do like your scientific terminolgy though for predicting how useful a feature is by saying sales will be massive.  When Sony dropped BC with the 40GB and cut price the sales rocketed but this doesn't signify BC was unimportant to a significant portion of gamers.  You seem to be replying to me and trying to put words into my mouth...

I doubt that many PS3 users use this feature, i know that i never have, so why continue to offer it when they could be putting the resources into making more games... I would prefer that!

why did you partition 40GBs of your HDD for linux? Most of the time 10GBs is perfect.

Still this is actually pretty bad for the medical community. A lot of scientists have networked PS3s together in order to visualize diseases and other issues in full rendered 3D.

Only reason I see this being removed isn't because of cost, since it doesn't cost a damn thing to keep, but IBM complained that it was stealing sales from their medical systems. Pissing off IBM = no more Cell shrink research.

This is certainly not an excuse not to get a PS3... at most it's an excuse to get the previous model.

They had to do what they gotta do to lower the price.
