Forums - Sony - PS3 Slim Axes the "Install Another OS" Feature!

I don't think a lot of people have ever even used this feature. I doubt even 5% of them PS3 owners knew that feature existed. I would be suprised if even more than 10k people in the world have even tried this feature and even fewer have used it seriously. So, not a big loss.

I liked the feature, but clearly in the bigger picture it made no difference to sales really. And if it allows a cheaper cost for Sony to drop it then it's better for them not to have it. The majority of potential owners will have no interest in installing another OS.

Still, it's always a shame to see a feature dropped.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Actually I'm glad I have my "fat" Ps3 because from the pictures it appears that the slim has no easy access to the HDD. And the HDD being easily replaceable is a much more important feature.

Update: The hands-on from Engadget confirms that the HD is swappable, a screw on the bottom releases part of the front giving access to the cradle. The "other OS" removal is a nuisance, but I can live with that.

Why would Sony axe this feature? It makes no sense to me.

PS3 is positioned as a game system and movie player now, not a computer for doing work.  One less point to mess the system up with.

I agree.  Linux on the PS3 is only a selling feature to scientists, and they probably aren't buying many games.  It will be interesting if firmware 3.0 does away with this capability for the current PS3's as well.  I bet it will.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

it will also have a external power brick like the ps2 slims so i still like the older ps3 skus that have a built in power supply and look shinny

Aw come on, I was going to do this once I got a new PS3. Maybe they will bring it back in a later model..

My best guess... researchers buying PS3s for development with the Cell are probably causing some loss for Sony, as most of them probably don't buy games. We've heard of several stories of scientists having clusters with dozens of PS3s.

Anyway, for me this means the Slim is a no go... I'll settle for a used fat one if anything.

Definitely your best anti PS3 quote ever

you're good.

I don't know if anyone ever watches the homebrew conferences. One of things they bring up in regards to the success and speed of running homebrew is how successful to get homebrew running on various systems. One of the things they liked about the PS3 was that they didn't have to hack it to run unsigned code. Well as with all things protected one group will hack it for for homebrew, but then you get people who exploit there work. I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about. It is garunteed now that if PS3 wasn't pirate hacked before the new one will be.

What i'm curious now will see the results of piracy on the PS3. Will it increase the number of units sold?

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Bokal what's anti PS3 about saying I prefer the features of the fat PS3 to the ones of the slim?

Don't take it that way

Just that probably 2/3 of your posts are anti PS3, I'm pretty sure you'd NEVER EVER want a PS3...
So complaining about the removal of the least used (and probably least useful yet) feature of the PS3, and giving it as a reason not to buy one, I think it's funny.

I'll go growing silently now.
