Forums - Sony - It's Official, PS3 slim announced

One thing I don't like is that its 299 dollars in the US and 299 Euro's in Europe. I know, of course, that we don't have dollars here... but in today's exchange rate the European version will be around 30 % more expensive. Not as bad as Steam but still a tad unfair imo.

the dome is the new Sony thing, don't you know.

Now about that 15 year old controller......

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Woah, I didn't notice it before but the power cord is different. Is there a power brick now or is it just the cord that's changed?

It was nice that the power cord of the fat PS3's was the same thing you would use to connect your computer to an outlet. There were a few times where I either forgot my PS3 or PC's power cable (after traveling) and I usually always had a backup.

Imo:

price cut = good
appearance of the slim PS3 = bad

Here's a question: Is the hard drive still an ordinary, user-replaceable SATA drive?

That's one of my favourite PS3 features.

Wii is Domed

Ok, time for me to chime in with my thoughts that aren't that important:
1. Fugly or not (not saying it is), who cares? Not sure people care how it looks, so long as it has a good price point.
2. This move explains why the sales look to have been off with the PS3. They were clearing out channels for the new model. On this note on sales, let's see how it goes.
3. Need to see what will really happen with Wii and the waggle now that the 360 and PS3 will be putting pressure on the Wii.
4. Good to see Sony is serious about being competitive. Also, Jack Trenton, for me, is the guy who needs to be doing announcements. He has an "every man" look to him that tempers the early impression Sony gave with the PS3 as arrogant.
5. So, the slim IS longer. Rampstation? The PS3 has that same arch to it as the Slim model does. Just it was higher off the ground, so it was less noticeable.

6. So, is Sony only going to go with one model PS3 now?

The spec sheet still says 2.5" serial ATA and the images of the Slim look like the position of the hard drive cage will be under the disk slot rather than on the right side (or bottom if standing vertical).

I actually think its their best looking console ever. Perhaps the PS1 just beats it.
