Forums - PC - Need Help With Compiz

I've got a tangential question for you Compiz users. Since when Metacity was fixed to act as a compositor, I never looked again into Compiz because I simply liked more the window-snapping of Metacity and it caused me oh so fewer headaches when it comes to integration with pager etc.
Are you guys into it for the eyecandy or does it actually add practical, useful features?

OT: as Soleron says, try the Nouveau drivers. I'm using them in my Fedora 12 rawhide with excellent results. But I'm not sure if Compiz is more requiring in accelerated functions.

metacity its the window manager?
if you still have the effects just no borders.

and have emerald installed.

go to start up programs and add "emerald --replace" command name it emerald.
i have a 8400 running nvidia 185 just fine.

Other way around. I have the borders but no effects until I "compiz --replace"

What are the nouveau drivers? I've never heard them mentioned before.

Open-source drivers for Nvidia cards, not endorsed by Nvidia. They should be able to run Compiz. Accelerated 3D is in progress, so if you need that then this isn't an option.

How to install:

Figured it out from the crash log and some experimentation. It's the Window Previews plugin (the one that shows a miniature version of the window when you hover over it on the taskbar). No idea why that is crashing or if I can tweak the plugin to block that.

Do you know how to enable/disable Compiz plugins?

Yes. I disabled the plugin. (Actually, it has to be manually enabled in the first place since it's not default on Ubuntu.) I was just hoping I could tweak it since I like the plugin. Not really essential, just nice.

well good.
i was trying kde 4.3... i am to ubuntu, its slow in my machine.

If KDE is to slow, you could try XFCE. (sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop) and for future releases use the Xubuntu version. XFCE is much simpler than Gnome or KDE so it's faster. You could also try KDE 3 instead of 4 (also lower requirements) but it won't be much faster and it's barely supported by any new programs so I wouldn't recommend it.

i am okay with ubuntu (gnome) its fast even with compiz on  i am about to do a clean install now.

the only slow app was firefox but i am using swiftfox now.

kde 4 it's like windows 7, not as slow, but some things  require more cpu than ubuntu, way more, needed at least a dual core cpu.

us Prescott based single core oldies, can't take, even with a decent gpu.
