Final Fantasy Viii. I'm still impressed by the opening cutscene even by today's standards. Some Renzokuken animations were also very cool.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Oblivion

Oblivion is not only the most beautiful, but graphically the most impressive game this generation because it's a completely open world with huge draw distances and still so detailed and marvelous in almost every way.

I love that Todd Howard, the producer and game director of Oblivion, in July 2009 said this about graphics:

"I think the main character and story in our games is the world around you. What the flowers look like, the chairs, the castles, you name it. Exploring that world is the key driving force, and as 3D graphics have gotten better, so have the games. People usually scoff the importance of graphics, but I feel it’s probably the number one thing in a game like this. It immediately puts you in another world, it suspends your disbelief and makes it feel new, or amazing, whatever you want to call it. We obsess over the world detail, and the art and technology to make that happen."

I can only agree and I can't wait 'til they announce The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, cause it's gonna be even more amazing.

Killzone 2, based on art style alone, if we go into graphics thats just in the jaw dropping category

Mirror's edge, graphics arent crazy impressive but the art style is incredible

Uncharted, graphics are artstyle is great

Ratchet and clank PS3, easily the best looking game aiming for pixar graphics

Sometimes I just don't run and take a good look at the world and WOW the background looks AMAZING. It really looks just as good as the bullshots, although the closeups don't look as good.

I think that EA might actually benefit by making Mirror's Edge either a PS3 (it'll make more sense IMO), or a 360 exclusive. Like Rockstar's logic, with exclusives and relatively new IP, you automatically get hype and appreciation from the fanboy base from either side, wheras with multiplat (at least for the most part... look what happened to Prototype XD) it'll be a "meh" thing, where people who genuinely want the game will buy it, while others won't just automatically buy the game due to it being multiplat.

It was my first Elder Scrolls game and I'm really wondering what an Elder Scroll V would look like.

I wonder how hyped and wowed you Elder Scrolls fans must have been when you were first went into the first dungeon and saw some slick skined monster being lightly tinted by a glowing stone or a small fire.

I love just exploring in that game, and then when I reach some high place, looking across the world.

Hopefully they could spice up the environments though >.< At the very least do some pallete changes or something. Maybe they could get the fanbase to help out and create their own dungeons as if they were mods, and then the developers take some parts/entirety of it.

If the next one was set in Skyrm (sp?) holy shit is that going to be bland =/

I wonder how long it'll take if they decide to do the entire continent...

I have to agree Oblivion is one of the most beautiful games ever, the sense of scale is amazing, the world stretching away into the distant...

Sigh. 200 hours of fun.

But I agree with others that have stated Wind Waker is the best looking game. It's superbly animated, full of character and has aged better than pretty much every game of it's generation. I've been playing through it again recently and I was amazed that it's 6 years old and still looking so beautiful. That's what great art design does, folks.

the games in this thread are all so beautiful

Eternal Sonata is pretty ^_^

Skyrim, yes. I like snowy landscapes in games but it was already quite much snow and ice in Oblivion with the nice Bruma, Cloud Ruler Temple, Wizards tower etc. I wonder how they can make Skyrim environments varied.

Half Life 2

Fable II - crazy beautiful

I love bloom/HDR lighting.
