Forums - Nintendo - Wii July NPD numbers lowest since launch

How do they plan on reaching those projections? Wii is still down YoY weekly even with the recent releases of WSR and MH3. I don't think Iwata is sure of what he's talking about. He expects the same amount of Wii's that got sold last FY to get sold by the end of the current FY. That's almost impossible, as the Wii is alread 3.4 million down this fiscal year compared to the last. I think Iwata is relying too much again on a couple of games, and honestly if last year's AC and Wii Music were any indication, they shouldn't have tried the same this year.

With more releases they would have been OK, but now without many games coming out and the fact that they said that there will be no price cut, they will be in deep trouble. Not that the numbers are bad by any means, but the company will lose a lot of value because they may end up falling 7 - 8 million short of their forecast. They seem to have no interest in reverting this situation as they don't want to do anything about it. No new colors, no new bundles, no price cuts, no price cuts on older first party games, and barely any new games outside Japan. They could revert the situation, but it's obvious they won't since it's just too late. They seem to believe that 3 games (1 is an expansion and 1 a sequel) will pent up demand astronomically to the point that Wii will have a record breaking 2nd Half of the FY. Impossible, there's nothing that points to that happening. And it's not as simple as calling people pessimists, it's the truth that Nintendo is barely doing anything to revert the trend.

MH3 and WSR had a very limited effect. Wii Fit+ is not going to drive up sales as Wii Fit originally did and then there's no way NSMBWii will be able to move the millions of consoles needed for them to reach the projections, on it's own. I predict now that the Wii will end up at 20 million instead of the 26 million projected when the FY ends.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.

I think instead of getting a price cut, Nintendo should throw in NSMBWii to the package in the fall and keep the same price.

analyst, we know who should drop price & its not the wii

@trestres

what makes you think you know more than iwata?

No pricecut until the near death of the wii why? because if you look at what they did to the
GC you'll understand why

What makes you think I think that? You obviously have no clue about the subject, so your comment came as unnecessary and highly ignorant. First of all numbers and facts say much more than words. Iwata is obviously confused about the Wii sales as he stated on the fiscal report. He is expecting gargantuan things from these 3 games, but he has no way of properly predicting how much of an impact they will have. For starters, he has already said that even though WSR managed a small bump in HW, if WSR sales keep up he EXPECTS Wii HW to start going up in 6 - 8 weeks. But then they expected the same from Wii Music and AC:CF, and it didn't happen.

Nowhere I said I claimed to know more than Iwata, but when the Wii is already 3.4 million short of what it did in 2008 for the same period of time, then it's obviously clear that their expectations aren't getting anywhere fullfilled. Next time please take your time to read a properly made post instead of throwing out randomly generated and poorly worded accusations. If you want to debate do it intelligently or else I won't bother replying to you anymore.

Nintendo will increase the value of the Wii with new SKUs before they cut the price.

trestres is probaly right in saying nintendo won't meet thier forcast, wii sports resort and wii fit plus will only slow the decline and myabe keep things steady, they won't boost sales to the level needed to make up that 3.4 million gap. and while new super mario bros wii may sell alot who knows how the blue ocean will react when it comes to driving hardware sales.

Also one thing to keep in mind is that unlike the PS3 and the more expensive 360 SKUs, the Wii has been priced at mass market price since launch. Consequently I suspect a price cut for the Wii will have a significantly lesser impact.
It would appear that it's simply a matter of demand slowing down for the wii.

Yeah because the drop to $99 didn't do squat for the aged PS2 that was at mass market price for years.  When you try to analyze, I'd advice to you be objective and not just offer up a speil of what you want to happen.

this

EVEN if I do not consider Wii NEEDs a price cut

we will see

Time to Work !

@trestes: "But then they expected the same from Wii Music and AC:CF, and it didn't happen."

You are doing your prediction by assuming WSR, Wiifit+ and New Super Mario Bros Wii will perform similarly to Wii Music and Animal Crossing. I think they will not, and will perform closer to Wii Sports, Wiifit and New Super Mario Bros DS.

Is there any reason to think these games will perform more similarly to games they are totally unrelated to?

You know what Nintendo should do? a VAMPIRE game.

Fat chicks would dig it. And everybody knows HOW MANY fat chicks exist in this world.
