Forums - Sales - Oh wow, Chart Track was actually wrong

From this, I hope everyone realizes that these numbers are estimates and that estimates are revised based upon additional data.

Glad that got cleared up. Those numbers made absolutely no sense.

And people complain when we make adjustments

Seriously though - not to knock Chart Track here (as they do a fantastic job) but considering they directly track 85% of the market and yet still need to make these (reasonably significant) adjustments then it amazes me how people jump on VGC for the adjustments we need to make from time to time, especially given that we cover nowhere near 85% of the market (not even 1/50th of that).

Real talk.

So let me get this straight. Only Nintendo's numbers were wrong not MS or Sony?

If so i do not see what the problem is as those 2's numbers will not change thus meaning who cares? Nintendo won long ago, a few extra k's here and there dont change anything....

VGC is reliable in my view, sometimes people make mistakes, everyone makes them.

Crap, 3 things wrong here.
1. 500k is ALOT especially in the UK. Accuracy matters in a multibillion dollar industry, it does.

2. In terms of the Uk's expanding market and viability as the new top tier market, alongside Japan and US, it matters. For developers it matters, for retailers it matters, for GAME it certainly matters. For stock holders, whos confidence is directly determining the power and capabilty of said company, it matters.

3. Given what happened in japan recently the momuntum for Nintendo had swung even more negative after this news. Suddenly there was "proof" of a non japanese slowdown. Well there wasn't and again this affects all those factors i mentioned above.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

People don't jump on VGC adjustments.

They jump on ninja edits  you guys do.

It's almost like "1984" you do the adjustment there's discussion on it and few months ago no traces will be found of it unless someone digs really deeply into forum so VGC looks like it was "always" right.

I think that having log of adjustments made in website section of forum would be good solution.

Like:
14/08/2009 - PS2 adjusted from X to Y due to data from ...

since it would be too much work to keep it for everything
just for harware (all adjustments)
plus games adjustments above for example 10%.

I think it happens not so often so wouldn't be that much additional work.
Also it would increase credibility of VGC for professional users so could result in more citations and references.

^ agreed, Not to mention the fact that NO OTHER COMPETITORS do this.
