Ahh, Luke Plunkett. He never misses a chance, does he?

What an astonishing coincidence that Nielsen should release several graphs about console usage and Kotaku selectively chooses the one which looks worst for the Wii...

I have to ease off Kotaku a little, though. Stephen Totilo is writing for them now, so some of their articles are actually worth reading.

If it was by anyone else, I would have given the benefit of the doubt because the term is obscure and that is how others have reported it. But you would think people would know that this is the Internet and they need to go back to the source documents. Unfortunately, they don't -- because they don't want to.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

@mai: Thanks, I think the points you bring up are correct, so your numbers should be more accurate than mine.

Well, we both got graphs totally wrong =) I wasn't able to find what's the methodology behind those graphs. Internet sites that citing Nielsen usually full of fanboish rant rather than useful info, so I went on explaining those numbers by myself, until Demotruk cleared all issues (see link above).

Yeah, I read that aswell just after I posted my comment... Oh well, at least we have both proven that we know how to do the maths

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

People are playing gamecube more than Wii hahaha

The graphic takes things completely out of context. Since it is not starting at zero, it gives you the impression that the 360 has about five times more active users while it actually doesn't even have double the amount. All consoles are somewhere between 5.8 % and 11.3 %. That doesn't really sound like high numbers, does it?

Also, speaking in absolute numbers, the Wii has about 3.6 M active users according to this statistic, while the PS3 has about 2.3 M and the 360 has about 3.55 M

Looking at it like this, it all seems way more reasonable than reading that fanboyish article that comes along with the graphic. Still, I'm not really sure how good statistics work for this question, and as many others have stated, as long as it isn't specified what "active user" actually means, the whole thing is pretty meaningless.

That's a standard thing to do with graphs, you'll find the same thing on currency charts etc. I agree it's misleading if you're not used to it, but when you're used to the convention the space between the minimum and zero is redundant, thus removed.

I think it is a standard thing when your main goal is to see how something changed over time, just like it is with currency or with stocks. If you want to compare different items however, it shouldn't be done in my opinion. But I agree with you, it is quite common.

Yeah.  My stat teachers always said that kind of graph making was dishonest, unethical and basically you failed if you made a graph like that without starting at 0.

They felt strongly about it.

Hardcore gamers will always game. people not buying will be your so called casual gamers who play fifa or madden or w,e like once a month.
