Forums - Gaming - (Rumor) Grin software potential studio closures

Some sites like Gamasutra and Gaf had reports of Grin shutting down.

Gamasutra has learned from reliable development sources that Stockholm-based developer GRIN has seen significant layoffs, and may be facing difficulty staying afloat.

The news comes after the company saw heavy layoffs earlier this year, no doubt the partial result of weaker-than-expected sales and critical reception to 2009 games like Bionic Commando, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, and Terminator Salvation.

I just picked up chatter that Grin might be closing down. Apparently their employees were told that they don't have to show up for work tommorow.

This comes from a reliable source but I would like some more confirmation so I'm putting it in the rumor pile for now. Looking at the sales of Bionic Commando, Terminator and Wanted it wouldn't surprise me if they closed up shop.

They already closed the studios that worked on Terminator Salvation and Wanted. The last studio Stockholm is the last one.

Sad.

But not surprising after three bombs back to back to back.

At least unlike Ensemble and FASA etc., there really isn't any doubt why they're closing. Those games didn't sell well because they simply were not that good.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

It's ironic how the Wanted developer claimed that Madworld needed 3 million to be successful, but his game was close to being outsold by it, and his studio closed down.

Bionic Commando is also a mega-flop.

Where are the haters that usually troll the Wii forums? Huh?

Bionic Commando just doesn't appeal to anyone, even today. Sad, because the game is not bad at all. People that say it sucks just didn't play the game. Terminator is a different story for sure... Even Wanted was good, not great.

It saddens me to see the studio close for sure. I thought they had a lot of potential after Bionic Commando Rearmed. :/

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

I was sometimes perplexed how their games bombed so hard, but equally, how much they really expected Wanted or Terminator to sell. Seemed like a gamble relying on licenses which don't have much appeal.

Bionic Commando didn't deserve to flop though.

Hopefully all this Scandanivian talent will wind up together somewhere else, its a real shame. GRIN had some really talented developers they just works on the wrong games.

yeah i agree, bionic commando was a good game, it will have a cult following like the original nes game, which wasn't that much of a success.

i actually enjoyed the Wanted demo and if I see the game for $10-15 i'll buy it

It's official. Grin software has passed away.

It is with a heavy heart we announce today that GRIN has been forced to close its doors. This as too many publishers have been delaying their payments, causing an unbearable cashflow situation.

After twelve years of hard work, employing hundreds of wonderfully talented men and women, it is over. It has been a great adventure and the GRIN family has experienced what few have.

Looking back at twelve years of games, titles such as Ballistics, Bandits, GRAW 1 & 2, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Terminator: Salvation, Bionic Commando and our unreleased masterpiece that we weren’t allowed to finish; it has been a great ride.

We would like to thank a few special companies and individuals that have meant a lot for us during these years:

Phil Scott & Phil Wright and crew at Nvidia

Greg, Chris, Guy, Leigh and crew at Intel

Fabrice, Stephane, Mathieu, Romain, Nouredine and the rest of the team at UBI Soft for the wonderful opportunities on GRAW – you kicked us off, thanks!

The crew at SEB who stood by us at all times

Adam Boys and the guys at CAPCOM US. Thanks for being honest, a rare gift.

The biggest hug goes to all of our great team members and their families. We had a lot of fun even though we were fighting crazy hours and producers.

The final thanks goes out to our GRIN mom, Annelie – you stood by us and the company from birth to death – without you none of the great times would have happened.

And to all our gamers – we hope you had a good time.
