Well, my reason to not really enjoy the game is very specific to the game mechanics. I love the Ability stuff and all, but that's the most depth you'll get in the game as far as the combat system goes. It reminds me a bit of The Legend of Dragoon, where all you do is get Combos and master them... but that's it. Though, I have to say that you get 4 characters again, which is a good thing because it does speed up the process of the battles.
My biggest problem with the game is this though: I'm a completionist, I love getting everything in a game. In an RPG, I realize it can be very difficult the first time around, but it is possible. Sometimes, you just have this feeling that if you go back in a certain area after a certain event, a special item/equipment is waiting for you. Sadly, FFIX is the kind of game that have so many secrets and silly "first time you miss it, you can't get back" things. That seriously turns me off in ANY game I play. For example, the jumping rope stuff at the beginning with Vivi is seriously frustrating, but I want to get that item you can get after jumping for a long time right at the beginning. I've played other RPGs with stuff like that like Xenogears and the rock-paper-scissor challenge, but at least it was possible! And then there's Steiner's "real" ultimate weapon that you can only get after beating the game in a certain amount of time. What's good about doing stuff like this when there's no New Game+ in the game? Also, the "Steal" stuff is optional, but I like to get good equipment at the beginning so the game can be a bit "broken" and at the same time I don't have to grind so much, but sometimes you just don't know how many items a boss can have with its many different forms...!
I realize that if the Internet/friends wouldn't exist, I wouldn't have to worry about stuff like this, but when everyone keeps talking about FFIX and how good it is (a discussion thread for example), you're gonna realize how many stuff you can miss in the game.
Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
