Haven't read your post yet, but I'm about to. Just wanted to say that people regularly cite Metroid as one of Nintendo's "Big 3", but I don't understand why when both Pokémon and Kirby are actually bigger. Now, I'm going to read the thread and post my comments on it afterwards.

Good read but I'm upset by the lack of Game Freak or Intelligent Systems

Pixel Art can be fun.

@Onyxmeth: That's not what Reggie said at E3 :P

Also I'm kinda talking more about the fans when I talk about the 'holy trinity' :P

Reggie can say whatever he wants. He knows what brings in the most money though, and Metroid is lucky to crack the top 10.

I was commenting more on your "Just how likely is it that Nintendo would release a fully fledged installment of each of their big three franchises in the same year?" statement, since Metroid is neither top three big as far as critical reviews go recently, nor is it anywhere near top selling, meaning the fans are choosing other titles like Smash Bros. and Mario Kart over it. I mean hey, I love metroid as much as the next guy, but outside of the one time Samus was back on top of the world (the original Metroid Prime) she has merely settled back into a secondary series for Nintendo.

Fair enough, I guess you also saw the part where I stated that Metroid: Other M would lose out if Galaxy 2 and Zelda were released in the same year?

I was going to name the thread 'hardcore trifecta' but didn't wanna get into the hardcore debate so basically this is about the core Nintendo fans three most loved franchises (arguably)

Intelligent Systems are bound to SE for the moment but I did note them in my summary at the end - its squashed in with HAL I think.. also Game Freak are bound to handhelds mainly, I saw no point adding teams just for the sake of it and getting bashed for padding the list..

I see.

Done. Good read, very nice thread. Personally I desperately hope that Zelda Wii will make it out in 2010, and I also hope that Metroid: Other M and Super Mario Galaxy 2 don't get delayed to second half 2010. Because if this is what we have for the first half of 2010, I can't wait to see the second half.

Those are gonna be huge for the Wii.

that would be a lot of nintendo's best for one year. with SMG2 and Metroid other M already stated for 2010 I kind of hope zelda is for 2011 just so that 2011 isn't a crappy year to own a wii.

By 2011 there should be a lot of great third party support by then...

Also, they could always release like Pikmin 3 (if that's not in 2010 and Zelda is moved to 2011) or a new Paper Mario or something.

If Zelda IS in 2010 though...

The problem with the idea of Paper Mario is, Intelligent Systems is currently tied up with making tons of other games, including a 6 game DSiWare deal with Square Enix.  The first soon to be coming out, called 'Dragon Quest Wars'.

As for the idea of a holy trinity, its not outside of the relm of possibility, and Nintendo tried to do something similar on the GameCube.  However, I just think this new Zelda is going to take a lot longer to be made than 2010.  Miyamoto has stated the game is going to 'venture away from the Ocarina of Time/Twilight Princess' formula.  That alone means they have to come up with a whole new design for the game.  Probably something besides Z-Targetting and the same side camera action based gameplay.  For some reason, I've been thinking they're going to utilize the WiiMotionPlus to incorperate first person controls and 'freedom of movement' gameplay for the first time.  In essence, try to create the next Ocarina of Time for the new generation, but with quazi free movement sword physics and item controls (no more item locks or Z-Targetting).  And all of that takes time.  I mean, Ocarina of Time took 4 1/2 years to perfect on the N64.  So we should expect this game to take at least that long.

Metroid and the two new Mario games however should stay pretty much on target and release next year.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Before you follow that line of thinking, recall the same could have been said of early 2008, and well...you know how the Fall went. It was basically a traditional year in reverse, and it worked out fine for Nintendo. Maybe we're getting something similiar in 2010.
