Forums - Sony - Most Likely Scenario for PS3 Slim Pricing

More food for thought: when Sony released the Slim ps2 and the PSP-2000, the older models received no price cut.

The entire point of the price cut is to start selling ps3s at $299. They're not just doing it to clear out stock to make way for the Slim. The Slim is what's facilitating the price cut, and the price is here to stay. The older models are a sunk cost anyway. They just need to get them out the way.

The only time a smaller model released by SCE has cost more than it's predecessors is the PSP Go, but that has more to do with being DD-only than being so tiny. Plus, I don't think the form factor is a cost saving measure in that case.

With the 80 > 60 transition, the 80gb system and the 60gb systems were sold concurrently for over four months before the 40gb sku came in as the low end model, facilitating the price cut. The 80gb took awhile to drop in price as the 60gbs were still around for a good bit of those four months. The price cut came when the 60gbs were finally depleted.

In the current scenario, the Slim is the replacement model, and the 80gb units are almost already gone. They'll get a price cut weeks before the Slim appears, and should be 90% depleted by the Slim's release. The Slim won't have to wait for them to be cleared out before release.

The Slim should immediately replace the 80gb SKU at $299. Pricing the model at $399 then dropping the price a mere 2 months later would only serve to confuse people, and I doubt Sony would do this. The Slim is their big push to regain marketshare. They wouldn't hinder it with something so stupid.

what you say does make a lot of sense.

I just hope sony spams the media with slim ads like holiday 07.Every freakin where i went there was an ad for PS3,uncharted and heavenly sword.

In theatre ,on TV ,on radio,on billboards. That's why  bought a PS3.

They've already begun with Madden ads.

If it's true that the price is dropping on the 80gb as early as this Monday in Europe (which I assume would also happen in NA, as that would confirm the rumors of the price cut happening in time for Madden), I hope the last few days of Madden ads before release end in "Now starting at $299."  It'd probably be a bit too late for something like that, though.

Edit: Wow, it's Friday already.  Nevermind.  I'm thinking when the French retailer said "next Monday" they meant the Monday after this coming Monday.

Makes sense.  Although, with Sony, I can't help feeling you should have said 'They hopefully won't hinder it with something so stupid.'

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Doesn't matter.

When Sony brings PS3 + PSeye + "wiimote" = 250$ I'll be buying.

Long time to wait yet.

I was thinking as I typed that line, "I'm sure someone will respond with 'But this is Sony!'"

i think a 299$ price tag would be perfect...will sell great...maybe not so great like Wii these days but it will still run for 2nd place this gen...and then we have to wait till we see what an impact a 199$ ps3 will have!

I think we are rather going to see pricing like this:

350$ for PS3 slim with 1 hot game bundled in USA (think GT5 or Uncharted 2 hot)
300 euros for PS3 slim in europe - bundled with Uncharted 1 or GT5Prologue.

More likely Sony will release a stand-alone 120GB PS3 slim at $299.99 and have a "limited edition" 250GB PS3 slim GT5 bundle and a voucher for something like WipEout HD at $399.99.

I think the Slim will be released at 399.
