More food for thought: when Sony released the Slim ps2 and the PSP-2000, the older models received no price cut.
The entire point of the price cut is to start selling ps3s at $299. They're not just doing it to clear out stock to make way for the Slim. The Slim is what's facilitating the price cut, and the price is here to stay. The older models are a sunk cost anyway. They just need to get them out the way.
The only time a smaller model released by SCE has cost more than it's predecessors is the PSP Go, but that has more to do with being DD-only than being so tiny. Plus, I don't think the form factor is a cost saving measure in that case.
