Forums - Gaming - Which nations have contributed the most to gaming?

I would think it's really a tie between Japan and America. The US invented gaming and popularized it but Japan has dominated gaming and game development for the past couple decades. They also produced most home consoles.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

I'd actually say the most dominant game currently was developed in America.

I mean it freaking wrecks peoples lives and is considered by some studies as addictive as heroin.

Japan, then the USA.

@ Kasz
you are not handing this over to the communists.

USA

No PC gamers here?

I think the US is really being overlooked here. They've got Will Wright (Sims anything), Blizzard (WoW, Starcraft, Diablo 2), and Valve (Steam, Half-Life). That's only the current big names off the top of my head - I'm sure an old game history expert can give the details, but I'm willing to bet far more game genres were "born" in the U.S. than anywhere else. Hell, the whole Dragon Quest idea was only possible due to the older WRPG's.

While I usually prefer Japanese games more than others, I think those saying it goes to Japan "easily" may be a bit off. If they are #1, I'd say it's mainly thanks to Nintendo (NES, Mario, Game Boy, DS, Wii).

Yeah, granted Wow is popular but think about it. Wow has 11 million subscibers or so when Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros. and the like have all sold wayyyyy more copies.

At least some people see it.
Being absolutely crazy does not mean you contribute more. Creating a game where you are a squid that eats babies while playing the banjo isn't that much of a contribution.
What I'm saying is that the japanese are crazy about their games, sure. They love them, and they make alot of different ones. But the western devs have innovated more. I think even capcom and konami said japanese devs were "stuck in the past".

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
