I'd like to do a meta-analysis of the most aggro people on this site and correlate to their favourite games. Then we can objectively identify which games should be banned for making people anti-social. My money is on Wii Fit, or Viva Pinata.

I simply must applaud kowenicki for the timeliness of this thread, and for putting forth the effort. The majority of those that are bitching do not appreciate how utterly time consuming doing all of the calculations involved can be. To create a decent statistical analysis it can take you three or four hours. To do a top notch one takes days. You don't have to respect the end point, but you do need to respect the craftsmanship.

This thread was sorely needed as are more threads of this sort. These forums are often lacking in objectivity, and run on high octane emotion. Rarely resulting in meaningful discourse. In other words members rarely feel motivated to actually comprehend the numbers or their implications. Even worse the thinking is almost one dimensional. That is why members get so vexed by these numbers. They cannot think laterally, or from different angles.

These forums used to have many more threads like these, and members were trying to grasp implications. They wanted to understand the problems, and they wanted to understand the obstacles. In so doing you can find solutions. The problem for Sony isn't that they are that far behind. The problem is one of leverage, and no it isn't just the price. Sony was in a knock down drag out tussle with Microsoft even before the 360 saw a price cut.

Thinking only in terms of price overlooks one major issue. The PS3 is just a carbon copy of the 360, and consumers know this. They are the same console with bells and whistles in different places. The problem for the PS3 is that its nestled in the shadow of the 360 in a world of first come first serve. They are dancing to Microsoft's song, and quite frankly so is every member of the Sony Defense Forces on these forums. Did you really think Sony could beat Microsoft at their own game.

The solution for Sony overcoming these deficits which frankly will take a couple years to erase at least in which time Microsoft will undoubtedly up the ante. They need to do something to get out from under that shadow in a very loud way. Even if they can only yell for a little bit. Just to get noticed, and thought of as different.

Look to the graphs, and the percentile increases for major software titles for the PS3. For all the talk members have about this game or that game. What Sony needs to do to find its own path, and not be tidally locked to the 360 is to overwhelm with software. Sony needs to do is blow it all on one hand. This holiday season is really the best chance they will have to do it as well. While Microsoft is out of position to respond. In fact it may be the only time.

For Sony to have any real chance out they need to have all their key titles out this holiday season, and advertise them heavily. They simply can't be going one for one with Microsoft. The down side, and it is a big one is once blown if they do not succeed they will really pay the price next year. They will not have any titles to fall back on, and the losses on the software sales would be pretty staggering. They just need to make their software look ungodly for anyone watching the television in October, and when I say all. I mean all with nothing being left behind.

There are numbers that work for Sony, but as these figures show if they play the protracted game. They will not and cannot get there. You cannot win the game if your letting the other guy make all the rules, because all the rules he is laying down are all in his favor. Honestly I doubt that Sony would take this kind of leap, but if they did given what the prevailing view is on the forums right now. This could start making up the difference in quarter million blocks per week in the holiday season, and fifty thousand blocks in weeks in the new year. Without you can just give up the ghost right now.

I think ps3 will catch up on the 360 by 2012.

^ I agree with most of your points, except the one that says Sony needs to blow their whole load this year. They can hold some significant releases in reserve. But I do think GT5 for holiday '09 is necessary to get them up. We already know their other holiday '09 releases and they are good companion pieces to GT5, but they are no substitute.

For Japan GT5 and FFXIII are essential to bring that market around, and soon.

Why people still insist on this?

1º place - Wii
2º place - 360
3º place - PS3

the PS4 can narrow the gap to 4 or 3 million, but it won't pass the 360. Simply no way.
