We'll be unlocking The Orange Box products just after midnight Pacific time next week on the 10th of October. Lots of people have been having a lot of fun with the Team Fortress 2 beta, so we're looking forward to seeing what people think of Portal and Episode Two. The Orange Box will also be available at North American game retailers later on the 10th, for both PC and XBOX 360.

I don't think I'll be staying up that night though. It says "AFTER midnight Pacific time."

That's 2 am my time, same time as the Brawl updates, so I'll be up...but I know Valve. It's AFTER 2 am, which probably means 4:30 am.

The main problem is the weird space-time differences between us and Valve.  They work in their own dimension so they can get the games done...just not at the time they tell us...

By the way, the title is misleading...it's unlockable for ANYBODY who buys it at midnight at a store (if there is such a promotion), or buys it online at midnight Pacific.

You don't need to preload it, but of course, you'd be stupid not to, because at midnight Pacific, the Steam download servers will be just a wee bit busy.
